“Darkhorse” 3rd Battalion 5th Marines Now in Battle

We are asking everyone to say a prayer for “Darkhorse” 3rd Battalion 5th Marines and their families. They are fighting it out in Afghanistan & they have lost 9 marines in 4 days. IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE the message spread if more could pass it on.

When did 3/5 start calling themselves “Darkhorse”?

I served with them 20 years ago, they were the Consummate Professionals. Kind of goofy but that was the motto, I didn’t know you could just change it.

Members of 3rd Battalion are currently conducting operations in the Sangin District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.[6] As of December 2010, 16 of the battalion's Marines have been killed in action[7], including the son of Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly, head of the Marine Forces Reserve.[8]

To date the battalion has seen seven members decorated with the Navy Cross, all for gallantry in combat, two in Korea and five in Iraq. This is the most for any unit in the Marine Corps.

I think the Dark Horse are in batte so often that we keep getting reminders to pray for them. A week doesn’t go by that they are not in some face to face action with the enemy.

From what I can gather they are at the center of the drug supply network in Helmund province, and they are dis assembling the infrastructure there that generates all the money that supports the Taliban from the poppy crops.

That means they encounter armed cadres of Taliban on a frequent basis.THe butchers bill is high.
