Bernard Madoff Will Not Travel to Son Mark’s Funeral

Convicted Ponzi-schemer Bernard Madoff won’t attend his son Mark’s funeral, according to CNBC.

Madoff’s eldest son Mark hanged himself Saturday by a dog leash on a metal ceiling beam in his Manhattan loft apartment. The death was officially ruled a suicide by hanging Sunday by the city medical examiner.

Madoff will not travel to the funeral, but instead will hold a private ceremony at the medium-security Butner Federal Correctional Institution in North Carolina where he is serving a 150-year sentence. His decision not to attend is to protect his family’s privacy, Ira Lee Sorkin, Madoff’s attorney, told CNBC.

“He will not be attending the funeral service out of consideration of his daughters-in-law and grandchildren’s privacy,” Sorkin said in a statement. “He will conduct a private service on his own where he is currently residing.”

The 46-year-old Mark Madoff died on the anniversary of his father's arrest two years ago in the largest pyramid scheme ever recorded. It followed the filing in recent weeks of dozens of lawsuits by trustee Irving Picard as he pursued billions of dollars in damages against those who profited from the multi-decade fraud.

Earlier, news reports said it is unlikely that Madoff would be allowed to attend his son’s funeral.

A report in The New York Post pointed out that the rules of the prison where Madoff is interned note that supervised furloughs to attend funerals of “immediate family members” are available only to inmates with two years or less pending on their prison terms.

I think he has the same appointment for himself with a little help in jail IMO.

While he won’t be going to his son’s funeral, I have an idea whose funeral he will be allowed to attend.

"He will not be attending the funeral service out of consideration of his daughters-in-law and grandchildren’s privacy"

Well, that and the law preventing his attendance, butting spinning is still allowed under the statute.

Nothing would keep me away...this "protect the family's privacy" is nothing but a cover. Their privacy was breached long ago. Disgusting...this man doesn't even have honor in prison.

He should spend time in the box, just like they made Cool Hand Luke, during his mother’s funeral.

I got the impression that this guy was such a sociopath that this probably doesn't effect him in the least. Why hit the funeral when you can take a nap.

Wonder if I can send Bernie a dog collar in honor of his son?

Maybe not. TV news was just saying that NO ONE has arranged to handle the son's body ~ so it would seem there will be no funeral.

I doubt the old man will have a funeral either.

Here's the practical problem ~ there are MANY people who are convinced Madoff had a secret stash where he put billions of bucks. They are also convinced the whole crowd around Madoff knows about the stash and could lead them to it.

If there's a gathering of the Madoffs and their 50 closest friends there'll probably be 100,000 others who want some and they'll be right there making the Phelps clan invisible.

Bernie and his partners in crime destroyed their chance to lead normal human lives. Now its time to treat them like the trash they made themselves.

This is a man who truly screwed his family as a Husband, Father, and Grandfather. Although they lived the high life and clearly, from his deceased son's digs in Manhattan, a fine life still, he left only humiliation and devastation regarding the earthly goods and social niceties of this earth.

Sad the young Madoff, in his anguish, was unable to turn to a higher source to comfort him.

As one who has often dealt with suicidal tendencies, it has always been my ultimate line that I could not bear to leave this earth at my own hand and give God the bird. No matter how bad it gets there is ALWAYS hope. Sad whenever a soul can't feel that or hope for it. That is true darkness. God bless this son's soul. May he one day find a peace in the Lord.

May we all share hope and inspiration to all of those around us. You never know when you have given them the litter light or big light they need to bear another day and give God one more chance at sheltering them with peace.

Are prisoners normally allowed to go to funerals?

It's probably a cover for "my daughter-in-law and grandchildren despise me and consider me responsible for my son's suicide, and rightly so". Showing up at his son's funeral would only cause his son's family more grief.
