Bowl season snooze fest must end
Fox Sports ^ | December 28, 2010 | Fox Sports

After a college footballweekend that was essentially nothing more than a media pile-on against the NCAA for its head-scratching treatment of five Ohio State players who violated the rules, I've got a bone to pick with the association, too.

The 2010-2011 bowl season has been downright awful.

I may be in the minority, but I say no to the BCS and no to playoffs. Bring back the tradition and pageantry that the major bowls had before the BCS.

Agreed.

Even if you have playoff, there is still the problem of
scheduling bias...you may have 4 strong teams in the east or
west, and they would have to play out there and they might
nullify each other....then you have to have to stratify the
contests by top seed vs. lower seed, like with basketball,
and that’s realllllly fair, isn’t it? I say to H**l with it.
Even if some no. 2 beats a no.1...it won’t stop the arguments,
bad calls, bad weather, gambling, etc would enter into
the argument of why no. 2 isn’t really better than no. 1..
“we wuz robbed” etc...in the long run, who remembers who was
the 1976 “national” champion, and eventually who really cares
except those who were intimately involved.

It was nice during the Rose Bowl to actually see the marching bands playing at halftime for once.

In a national playoff the nation would be on the edge of its seat. Weekends would be filled with excitement instead of suicides. Playoffs are an absolute must. The empty stadiums are killing this sport. Start now!!

I think playoffs would definitely spark some interest in college football. Bowl games are a drag and besides, how can a college football team say with pride that they are competing in the Tostito Bowl!

“It’s Liberal PC. Every college gets to go to a bowl.”

BINGO! We’re all winners!

There have been some good games. Last night’s Sugar Bowl would have been better had it not been for that bad call (safety? Nope!) late in the game.

Bowl Season is a great time of year, IMO. Games that conflict can get recorded and watched later.

Arkansas totally blew that game with the dropped passes, and that ridiculous Mallet interception at the end of the game. Mallet must have thought he was still at Michigan when he made that throw.

Most of the bowl matchups were complete crap. I hope the ratings and ticket sales reflected that.

Wisconsin/TCU was the only game I really wanted to see. Congrats TCU, co-National Champion.

"Bring back the tradition and pageantry that the major bowls had before the BCS."

I despise the BCS, but I don't like a handful of idiot sportswriters choosing the champion, either.

If they wanted the bowls to be entertaining they could certainly pick better match ups. WVU vs. Mich would have been awesome.

Actually just barely over half of NHL and NBA teams go to the playoffs (16 out of 30 in both cases). What you’re saying is actually how it used to be, the NHL used to send 16 out of 21 teams, NBA was similar, they’ve expanded the leagues without expanding the playoffs.

There’s really nothing liberal about it. In the case of he NBA and NHL they’re trying to make the money to pay the salaries. Most of their stadiums are in the 18 to 25 thousand seat range, and they don’t have the massive TV contracts of the NFL or NCAA. If you’re going to be paying 50 or 60 million dollars a year in player salary, plus coaches, trainers, rent on the stadium, some sort of training facility, office and advertising you’re going to need to play a lot of games. So you have a big regular season (82 games) and big playoffs (potentially 28 games for the final 2 teams).

For the Bowls it’s similar. Bowl games make money. Both in the selling of the TV contracts and, most importantly, in the happy alumni. Alumni associations are a major source of funding in college sports, and they like to see their teams play in any kind of post season. Whether it’s a 92 team (coming soon) basketball tournament or a meaningless bowl game, the post season is the post season and they make alumni happy and happy alumni write checks.
