Since the season is more than month away, and information is incomplete, this is a preliminary post. When more information develops, I'll post the "formal" announcement.

Survivor: Redemption Island is the 22nd season of Survivor. It begins Wednesday, February 16, 2011 on CBS.
This season introduces a new twist:
From Wikipedia: When a contestant is voted off their tribe, instead of leaving the game, they are taken to the area known as Redemption Island. There, they will have to sustain themselves in the same manner as when they were with their tribe, living on limited food and water supplies and shelter. When the next contestant is voted off, they are also sent to Redemption Island, and the two people will face off in a duel challenge. The winner remains in the game, living at Redemption Island, while the loser is finally removed from the game. At pre-determined points in the game, the person at Redemption Island will have a chance to return to the game and be reunited with the remaining players in the game.
There is also a rule change. If a player quits during the jury phase, the producers reserve the right to not allow that player to serve on the jury.

This season takes place in the same location as last season: in the vicinity of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.
CBS has announced sixteen of the eighteen players for this season. The other two players yet to be named will be "former castaways." The rumors are that those two players will be Rob Mariano (Boston Rob) and Russell Hantz - and that they will each captain a team (video). If true, this would be the third appearance for Russell and the fourth appearance for Boston Rob.
Ten of the sixteen players are from Southern California.

Russell did good going to her, but unfortunately #6 and her alliance are idiots. Throwing a challenge is so beyond stooopid. They had plenty of time to get rid of Russell later, just don't give the other tribe the immunity, geez!!! Here's to Rob picking them off, one by one, and then decimating them at merge.
But Rob was also an idiot last week kicking off Matt. Then this week making an alliance with wacky Phillip?!? Did Rob not learn anything from the past? Do NOT tell the mental patient anything until the very last second or he'll be running his mouth all over the island.
Sad Russell got voted out. He really needed more than 3 votes to begin with. His “rep” preceded him with the rest of the tribe. Hope he makes it through Redemption Island.
Uh, no. It was junior high-ish. It was a non-event tv moment. It served no purpose whatsoever. Matt or Francesca. Big whoop. Either way, you're going to have to win some unknown challenge that may or may not be within your or your challenger's bag of skills or who lady luck will shine on. At this point in the game, who's on Redemption doesn't matter that much. Later on, like the last 2-3 folks, it will become a major game play.
The only good in sending witnesses to the Redemption challenges is that those back at camp have time to gossip and possibly realign. Wonder if you can give up your colored ball and remain at camp. That's what I'd do as it seems magnanimous but you lose nothing... nothing until the final games that is.

It appears one camp is in Russell’s corner for winning the tile challenge on RI and the other camp Matt’s side.
One side is wrong and I hope its Matt goes home - just because I want to see the anit-Russell crowd go nuts.
Apparently, Jeff doesn’t have his blog up for last night’s episode.
Hey, Jeff, you didn’t tell us you were going to let contestants go off on rants. At tribal council, it’s douse your torch and get off the stage pronto so what’s with the rule change on Redemption Island? Or did you just let Russell throw a tantrum because it made for good tv and you needed something to save face? Yeah, I’m trying to like the RI twist, but I’m just not diggin’ it right now. It’s taking away from getting to know the contestants and watching them strategize.
Ok, so who didn’t predict Russell would cry like a baby when he lost? That was a given. Russell didn’t give out any deep dark secrets. It’s not like they can hide who leaders and followers are (whatever their names are). It’s not helping the other team knowing/suspecting Ralph has the II. Ralph would have brought out the II if the gal (see, I don’t know anyone’s name because we haven’t seen them enough!) hadn’t told him not to (duh, Ralph!). But the real question is, will the RI challenges continue to be puzzles? If so, did Burnett chose challenges that leaned to Boston Rob’s skills? Not that his tribe was smart enough to send him packing on day one.
Speaking of Rob’s tribe, the scary wacko Phillip is still there. Why??? Sure, he’d be a great pawn for the final 3 but he’s a loose cannon right now. Who knows which way he’s going to firing off. Rob better watch out or he’ll be the next one who gets hit.
Well, might as well say it. Since I hardly know anyone’s name or anything about them, the only one worth cheering for now that Russell is gone is Rob.
I don’t think Russell ranted or threw a tantrum or cried like a baby. He cried briefly, but quickly regained his composure. He briefly expressed his disappointment in his teammates for throwing the challenge. And, he showed dignity in his exit.

I do find RI interesting. One of the regular posters at CBS Survivor linked to something Jeff said about RI as a place to gather intel.
So far intel has been gathered and it is interesting to see how the individuals handle it.
Phil handled it like a red hot cannon ball dropped into greasey hands.
I am tending towards rooting for Ralph. He is a lot of fun and seems. . . stable.
I like Rob of course but can’t imagine, even if he makes it to the final two, that a jury would vote for him to win the million.
Of course Rob’s got the people skills, so I suppose it’s not out of the question.
It seems from the previews that Rob is starting to figure out that he might want to keep Phil around. He’d be a good one to be in the final two with! He sure does make for interesting tv. Unstable! I hope competing in Survivor doesn’t hurt him. I think he is a nice guy.
Matt seems to be emerging as an underdog favorite. Even Russell had kind words for him. Rob seems to be the only one who doesn’t like him; probably because he knows he is a BIG threat.
Actually, Rob said he liked Matt and hated that he was voting him out. The only reason Matt was voted out was because he congratulated the other team for winning the challenge. Otherwise it would have been the little blonde girl, who attached herself to Matt, to get the boot.

‘Ol Rob sure does a bunch of scrambling during the average day.
I wonder if we’ll ever be treated to a head to head puzzle challenge with Rob and the Lawyer dude?
Ralphy Boy was not listening during the challenge. Maybe the caller would have done better if he’d have shut up and stood still until called on to move.
How long will Matt survive? Granted he’s not had much competition in the puzzle department. Now, if he meets up with Rob there, all bets are off.
Ha, every time Rob gets a clue he makes a run for the potty.
Still wish they’d go back to the original Season 1 format where we got to know the contestants. I have no clue as to most of their names much less anything else. There’s a reason why so many fans can name contestants from way back when - it’s because we had a vested interest in them.
Did you notice David’s look at TC as he was “NOT” named in a sub-alliance? Priceless.
Ha, Dave thinks he’s the puzzle master but was clueless where he was on the totem pole.
