Playboy Magazine coming to iPad in its uncensored form in March, including full back catalog
Engadget ^ | 1/19/2011 | Vlad Savov

From its very first issue in 1953 to its latest incarnation, the full catalog of Playboy Magazine is coming to the iPad this March. And not only that, it'll be faithful to its original form by arriving to your Apple slate uncensored. Such is the word direct from the man responsible for that first copy, one Mr. Hugh Hefner. Anyone who's followed Apple's App Store rulings and Steve Jobs' forthright comments on the subject of keeping adult material off mobile devices will surely find this a bemusing, if not entirely inconsistent, decision. The details of how this slice of software will be delivered to the iPad (and what restrictions it may come with) will be most intriguing indeed.

How will all those insanely augmented breasts (OK, I’m just guessing here) fit onto such small screens? Wouldn’t Playboy be better advised to aim for the big screen market?

Playboy will be available to iPad users just as multitudinous forms of porn have been all along: through a web browser.

From a Playboy spokeswoman:

We are releasing a web-based subscription service with Bondi Digital Publishing that will give users access to every issue of Playboy both past and present. The service will be iPad compatible and will utilize iPad functions.

We also have plans to release a non-nude version of a Playboy-branded iPad app in the coming months that adheres to all of Apple’s policies and guidelines.

Lots of hoop-la over nothing. You can read Playboy through Safari on the iPad; like you can do on any desktop or laptop computer - and have been able to do so, for years. Now the website will support iPads as well.

In short, no - the iTunes store does not allow Adult Material. Nothing has changed.

Didn’t Hef just take Playboy private again? Maybe this was the reason.

If so, some of the former stock holders are going to sue if this info was withheld.

Looks like he hasn’t taken it private, yet. Bet this news will bump up the buyout price quite a bit.

While I don’t condone this decision - lets get something straight (pointed out in original post/story) - this will be via a purchase in the iBooks store, not as an App.

Apple approves each and every app by hand. iBooks, not so much...

It seems strange that it’s not available on the Palm.

Wow, so many one liners, so little time.

I don’t think Apple had a decision in it at all. Although the apps are in a closed system, the web is wide open. Apple declined to comment because it’s not any of their business.
All Playboy is doing is optimizing a web site for the iPad.
BTW, other comments about Playboy and whether or not it was literature. There were definitely some great stories in it. I first read Jean Shepherd’s writings in Playboy. “Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories” was one of the funniest short stories ever written. Fahrenheit 451 was originally published in serialized format in Playboy magazine. There were also quite a few Playboy interviews that were excellent. The worst of Playboy’s writings was Hefner’s insufferable Playboy Philosophy. Hefner hired some top rate people for the text portion of the magazine, and often didn’t even read the fiction.

Exactly so. This has NOTHING whatsoever to do with Apple's rules about apps. Apple hasn't changed a thing.

Yet see how quickly the Apple haters and naysayers -- both in the media and here in FR -- jumped all over this as evidence of:

... none of which are true or even have any basis in fact.

*sigh* It must be nice to have so much free time to spend at pointless pursuits... :)

Enjoy it while you can, Heff.

You traded Eternity for lawn clippings.

Dumbass.

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

It’s a good thing that you have the free time to monitor these threads.

Since you pinged only two people, can we assume they were the ones that needed the correction?

Heh, not really; I pull up FR briefly in the morning and evening; it's rare I actually join the repartee for more than a few minutes. Heck, if I had more free time I'd run a ping list for Windows, for example, since one is sorely missing; but alas, I do not.

> Since you pinged only two people, can we assume they were the ones that needed the correction?

The "correction" has been all over the blogosphere and MSM news since not long after the original flawed reports appeared; I assume anyone interested figured it out. My ping to RK and SM was just a conversational reply to RK, with a courtesy ping to SM because of the Apple reference.

My line about people with free time was directed at the so-called journalists who didn't bother to research what HH's tweet actually meant, and reported (and endlessly repeated) falsehoods as a result. (It really must have been a "Slow news day").

My inclusion of a mention of FReepers was actually made in sadness. FR -used- to be the place where falsehoods were exposed and debunked, not repeated and elaborated. I didn't mean it as a slam, just a side comment.

Sorry if that came across differently than intended.
