Scientists fight bugs with poo

(Reuters) - Once a year, every year, Professor Thomas Borody receives a single-stem rose from one of his most grateful patients. She is, he says, thanking him for restoring her bowel flora.

It's a distasteful cure for a problem that's increasingly widespread: the Clostridium difficile bug, typically caught by patients in hospitals and nursing homes, can be hard to treat with antibiotics. But Borody is one of a group of scientists who believe the answer is a faecal transplant.

Some jokily call it a "transpoosion." Others have more sciencey names like "bacteriotherapy" or "stool infusion therapy." But the process involves, frankly, replacing a person's poo with someone else's, and in the process, giving them back the "good" bugs they desperately need.

He favors methods which avoid going in through the mouth or the nose, which he says may make patients gag.

No $#!t.

It would be a lot better if they could just give all patients on antibiotics in the hospital a capsule with the good bacteria, like the Lactobacillus capsules available OTC, and have a good chance of preventing many C diff infections.

Another thought: I’m guessing that particular collections of intestinal flora have something to do with the ease of weight loss or gain. A microbial array tailored for weight loss would be very profitable (healthy sustained weight loss, not Montezuma’s Revenge.)

So, pro-biotics don’t work? Or don’t work as well?

Have you noticed the Brown Cross's donor drives? After you donate you get a high fiber snack instead of the Red Cross's cookie and orange juice.

Is Lactobacillus the one he is trying to replace here?

I know i have some I bought from my chiropractor and had to keep it refrigerated and everything.

IS this also the type that is in the ‘enhanced’ yogurt?

This HAS to be the reason for Andrew Breitbart’s latest disclosure, so to speak.

He’s got the dread Clostridium Difficile and he’s trying to self-medicate.

Apparently not just lactobacillus, or you could take a whole bunch of the capsules. There are probably some bacteria that actually hold the C diff in check. Lots of us are walking around with C diff in small numbers and they won’t take over in the well-populated gut.
