Dogs in a Deadly Crossfire
The Daily Beast ^ | July 17, 2009 | Radley Balko

Confronted by the family pet, police often shoot first and ask questions later, reports Radley Balko. Among hundreds of recent victims: Labradors, Wheaten terriers, and a five-pound Chihuahua.

Beginning next year, police departments in Maryland will be required to report to the governor's office every time they kill a dog during a drug raid. That requirement is part of a new law pushed by Cheye Calvo, the mayor of the small town of Berwyn Heights.

Calvo proposed the legislation because police officers conducted a particularly violent raid last summer on his home in Prince George's County after intercepting a package of marijuana at a delivery-service warehouse. The cops then completed the delivery themselves to the address on the package. As it turns out, the house belonged Calvo, who had no connection to the drugs. The package was part of a botched distribution scheme in which an accomplice working for the delivery service was supposed to have intercepted it before it was delivered.

“You’re kicking down doors, barging in with guns, and when animals do what animals do, they become collateral damage.”

America has become a fascist country. Cops come in dressed in black, at 2AM, with no-knock raids, kill your pets, and if you dare defend against the masked intruders, they kill yoo, too.

It's sick. I have a female friend from Germany, who, upon coming to 'The Land of Freedom', remarks that we rather resemble wartime Germany in the 1940's now.

She's returning home, where she says she's actually free.

I can understand dogs wanting to defend their home. It is their basic nature and a good thing not a bad thing for the most part.

Cops should not do those kind of raids except in situations where lives are in imminent danger. Also they could try pepper spray first. I have used it on a doberman and it worked great.

I am just “guessing” that many homeowners would not hesitate to shoot anyone bursting into their homes and drawing guns.

Rightfully so. America is badly damaged, much changed from when I was growing up.

Back then, the police were into POLICING.

Now, we pretty much have a standing occupation army.

“You’re kicking down doors, barging in with guns, and when animals do what animals do, they become collateral damage.”

Oh I am so worried about the animals... Sarcasm...

These violent “no knock” warrents make a mockery of search and seizure protections. I mean when the government ignores the sanctity of private property, well, that’s what the Second Amendment is for. However, if you stand up to one of these illegal police actions you will die, or be in jail for life, or get the death sentence.

The other option is to defund city hall. Good luck with that. Even here on Free Republic the freedom loving average Joe sits in slack jawed awe of the Police. They need to be de funded. Get rid of District Attorneys. Dismantle the whole dam mess. Or, just keep trucking along like we are. Do “you people” really think that things will get better?

Problem is, she’s right. I cannot defend the changes I have seen, in my lifetime, to this country of mine.

From the article: “This sad trend appears to be a side effect of the new SWAT, paramilitary focus in many police departments, which has supplanted the idea of being an “officer of the peace.”

This is exactly what has happened to our police forces across the country. The HHS has expanded the war on Islamic terror to a war on the American people. We are all deemed suspected domestic “terrorists.”

The angrier people get from being abused in daily life (ie, at the airport or or other law enforcement contact) or having a friend or family member abused or seeing it in the news, the more respect Americans lose for the government and especially law enforcement.

That means they cooperate less less because they lose trust. We are headed for banana republic territory. This is actually making it MORE dangerous for police officers. They are making themselves an occupying force in our country. Check out Mexico!

We need to limit HHS to Islamic Terrorism only under the patriot act and we need to make politicans very sorry for calling Americans who are not Islamic terrorists - terrorists.

You know, I have heard the police defend No Knock because suspects would flush drugs. Right?

Simple solution: Have the city turn off water to the house, or the entire street even. They could flush exactly one easily-retrievable load.

No Knock is unnecessary.

It’s good, in my view, that we have some gathered data on the subject. Perhaps thanks to the efforts of Mr. Balko and others willing to shed light on the subject, we can increase public awareness of the problem and change our current course.

How about instead of turning off the water we end the practice of career prosecutors who’s careers live and die and arrest and conviction rates.

I am more concerned in today’s world with restoring the balance of power between the State and the People than I am in putting people in Jail.

I knew an old school cop who said that he could defuse 90% of bad situations by a bit of patience and politeness.

He made 30 years without having to shoot or compromise his duty.
