As the film director Peter Jackson recovers from emergency surgery, it has emerged that he is the victim of a US$190,000 (£120,000) credit card fraud.

Sir Peter, a keen collector of military memorabilia, used his American Express card online to buy items from the Michigan Toy Soldier Company, which specialises in historical miniature models and figurines.

Richard Berry, owner of the company, is now facing up to 18 months in jail after admitting fraudulently using the director's credit card information to shore up his struggling business, based in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Berry's lawyer, David Steingold, told a US court: "He needed inventory and used the credit card, and hoped to repay the money when sales picked up.

"Things got out of hand because the economy didn't turn around.

"This is the story of a struggling businessman who made a desperate move to keep the business going." ........

Sucks for Peter. I was never much of a Lord of the Rings fan though. J.R.R Tolkein seemed kind of liberal in his views on race to me.

If Peter listened to Rush Limbaugh, he would have had Lifelock and saved himself all this trouble.

I hope he has his computers backed up with Carbonite and he ordered Proflowers Valentine Bouquet for his wife.

LOL.

That's what I thought when I read this. Maybe it will be in his new Lifelock add.

And don't forget Sharis Berries!

That's what you call chutzpah--asking us to identify with the plight of the small businessman. Desperation does not justify a criminal act. His mistake was stealing from a famous person. Who's going to give their credit card information to this guy now? He's finished.

No kidding.

It is inexcusable.

Businesses fail all the time but how many owners characterize theft as just giving it “the old college try?”

My daughter had her credit info stolen as a freshman in college. Her credit rating dropped like a rock as they opened tons of accounts in her name and defaulted.

She has been fighting with it for 3 years now and has made some headway with all the fraud departments but still gets a call every now and then that someone has opened an account in her name. Its almost got her down and depressed now.

Once it starts they sell the info on line and you begin the nightmare. Horrible thing to happen to someone.

I can’t understand why these crimes (and criminals) continue to hurt victims years down the road.

I guess, once we’re all fingerprinted and micro-chipped.....it will be easy to know who is who.......

"J.R.R. Tolkien was a devout Catholic and conservative, and a close friend of C.S. Lewis (a great Christian writer) at Oxford. His vision of a mighty battle between good and evil in the realms of Middle Earth was brilliantly transferred to the screen, perfectly fitting a post 9/11 world where the forces of freedom found themselves pitted against a barbaric enemy." see link
