What do we do if OUR Government shuts down the internet?

Posted on 01/28/2011 9:33:26 PM PST by jongaltsr

Seeing what has happened in Egypt and their ability to quickly shut down the internet got me to thinking about the possibility that at some time in the future OUR Government may try the same with us.

Therefor I thought that to prepare for such an event should be planned by us (the citizens who would most likely to be effected as well as the people most likely to need alternatives to internet connections to stay in communications and keep upraised of events not being reported accurately (and intentionally).

We would have to depend upon our telephones but that can readily shut down by a government that is willing to cut off internet access.

TV and certain radio stations would be all that we could rely upon in such an event. I would imagine that some (Right Wing)-(other than the acceptable liberal radio stations) would be shut down (or can they?)

Can you (My fellow FR conspirators) think of methodologies of maintaining connections to information which can not easily be cut off by our government agencies?

In some countries, people have taken over Radio and Television stations but that requires physically attacking and provoking Police & Military action at some point.

Put on your thinking caps and lets see if there are any of you out there that can devise a plan of action for such an event.

My one thought (so far) is that the government might not shut down the telephone system immediately because that would directly affect so many people that that act in itself would be more devastating to citizens than would the loss of the internet. Therefor a "Tweet" link could be our own second line of information. I'm not sure if the "Tweet" system involves the internet in any way. Is it independent of computer technology and strictly Phone System dependant?

Since I don't "tweet", I just don't know the answer to that question.

Can you devise other ideas? and let us share your ideas "Just in Case !"

” if it’s technologically feasible, which I doubt”

The very idea of the internet was to route communications around large areas due to outages from nuclear war or natural disasters.

There’s is no way they could shut down the internet.....they could slow it down for a awhile until the people start setting up their own pirate internet.

They’d have to kill every private cell tower, private sattelites, major routing hubs etc. It just could not be done without crippling the governments ability to function.

It's a different America today. I'm convinced that there is a solid 30% of our "citizens" who would sell us and our nation out in a second.

IMO, the next war we fight will have two fronts; foreign and domestic.

The Internet may get disgusted and shut itself down.

“It’s a different America today.”

It certainly is, and no longer the America that I grew up in.
America started the decline sometime during or after Vietnam.

This site started as a BBS. I have run a BBS before. It is a way to connect lots of people without going through a public network. However, pretty soon, no one will have a modem on their laptop any more.

Might I suggest a compromise? A little tantrum* of our own?

You are guys...you know you want it. ;o)

* By “tantrum”...I mean just that. However, if others read something more into that word, that’s not my fault.

;o)

I can take an old ignition coil with cotact points, a battery and a small TV antenna and I can make Morse code appear on any car with an AM radio.

I remember when I was younger many a time when certain cars drove by that the AM radio in our car would pick up the RPM static from unshielded high voltage ignition systems.

There’s a whole generation out there raised with internet / cell phone / instant communication their whole lives. Wonder what their reaction would be.

I have a question of concern, when the web is dead and there is no connectivity except by radio and people are having Twitter withdrawal insanity taking over,

What brand of tires would be the best for burning in the streets?

I’m looking for easy to find types that are pretty common, none of those wagon wheel tires, thats like eating chhese puffs, they won’t burn much I think.

Anybody think maybe recaps would be the best choice?

Or should we start a poll?

Oh, and what you favorite method for getting a tire to light?

“Better rethink that, no more Freerepublic if you get your wish..! < /humor >”

Of course, I was being facetious.
I have to admit, however, this is a very convoluted thread, and I have replies to me that have ZERO to do with anything I have posted. I think one gal had been a bit deep into the bottle.

Yes, FR is my main link to what is going on back in the USSA.
I have been here for quite some time.

If our government shut down the Internet, there would be immediate chaos in the business world.

BUSINESS world, hell.

Much of the government world happens online too. I know this for fact.

They are too hooked in to absorb the blow.
