Nielsen: U.S. smartphone ownership higher among minorities

Almost a third (31 percent) of all mobile phone users in the United States own smartphones, but their adoption is higher among specific minority groups, says a report out today from Nielsen.

Based on a survey conducted in December, Nielsen found that 27 percent of white mobile phone users in the U.S. currently own smartphones. But that rate was lower than the 45 percent of Hispanics, 45 percent of Asians/Pacific Islanders, and 33 percent of African-American mobile users polled who said they have a smartphone.

An extension of ‘dubs’ and ‘spinnas’.

It’s the “Japanese camera syndrome” ~ of course East Asians have cameras hanging all over them ~ always have had. Smart phones are far easier to use to make movies than the cellphones that preceeded them.

I don’t think there is that much of a difference between 27 and 33 percent.

Then, factor in the larger size of the (so called) white consumer base, and ‘whites’ could have a lower percentage yet a higher ‘count’.

Still, bling is bling.

My experience with Smartphones - or any mobile phone, for that matter - is that the user's desire for one is in direct proportion to the banality of the calls.

As in, the user who's calls consist of: "Sup. Shopping for Peanut Butter, where you at?" desires a phone far more than the user whose calls come at 3am and consist of "There a critical situation at work that needs to be addressed immediately."

My opinion only.

And, smartphone or not, I'd gladly toss mine in the trash.

Whites are probably older on average than other groups. I wonder if differences persist when comparing young whites to young people of other races.

Have they adjusted for age of the various racial groups? This might just be an example of an average younger age of blacks and especially Hispanic in this country. I can't imagine my father ever getting a smart phone.

The folks with most disposable “income” are those with an EBT card. I see it all the time.

Sometimes it more that just bling and entertainment.

I am using “smartphones” for elder monitoring and some other applications. Take more than just buying the phone with a data plan, but with some thought they can do amazing things.

All you need to get a free cell phone is proof that you are on welfare, I wonder if these free phones are smart phones.

My kids and I have seen the same thing among the school population. The kids with subsidized breakfasts, lunches, gym clothes, etc. usually have expensive clothing and the latest in electronic technology.

Where do you think that their lunch money went? :-)

It's a good thing that I work, someone needs to pay for those manicures/smart phones/sneakers.
