Mel Gibson's 'death by cop' suicide attempt (After wife of 26 years ends their marriage)
The Telegraph ^ | 02/03/2011

Mel Gibson attempted to commit suicide by "death by cop" after his wife left him and ended their 26 year marriage, according to a friend of the star.

The "Braveheart" star apparently tried to goad a police office into drawing his weapon and shoot by hurling anti-Semitic slurs after he was stopped for drink driving.

The incident four years ago led to the steady decline of Gibson's once glittering Hollywood career and public shaming.

But a close friend has revealed Gibson wasn't anti-Jewish but on a mission to die because he felt he had failed after his wife Robyn had left him.

Death by cop is a popular way of suicide in the US where people deliberately provoke police offices into using their weapons.

Gibson, 55, was said to be distraught at the break-up of his marriage when he returned to his Los Angeles home from filming and discovered his wife and seven children had moved out.

Soon after he was stopped for drink driving and launched into his now infamous rant against the arresting officer saying "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world".

A friend of the actor told Hollywood author Peter Biskind that Gibson was trying to get the officer, James Mee, to draw his weapon and fire.

"He felt that he had just absolutely failed as human being, " a friend told Biskin writing in the Oscar's edition of Vanity Fair magazine.

"Mel was trying to invite death by cop. I don't think this was being anti-Semitic. I think he was trying to rile that guy into pulling out a gun and shooting."

According to the friend Gibson had said goodbye to everyone in the restaurant before getting in his car.

"I believe what was going on that night was farewell," the friend said.

Yes, because we all know that cops draw and fire when faced with verbal anti-semitism. These people really think we’re all idiots.

I wish Mel the greatest success and will always support him, even if he was “drink” driving.

IF this is true (and there are a lot of doubts), then I would say Gibson is more selfish that I previously thought. His wife leaves him because he cheats on her and he wants to ruin someone else’s life by goading him into shooting him? I mean what would have happened to this law enforcement officer’s life? Just a thought.

My thoughts exactly. In my eyes Mel just feel to the bottom of the barrel. I hope and pray he gets his act together for his sake. He needs to get a grip and understand, it just isn’t all about him.

The “friend” here must be one more out of work actor, desperate for a little media play, to regirgitate this story four years after the fact.

As for Mel himself, he needs to stay on his meds from now on and be nicer to himself and all others.

RE: even if he was “drink” driving.

The Telegraph is a UK paper. We should expect them to use British terms and British spelling.
