Vanity: FReeper research help needed.
I am trying to find an article or thread that I think I read during the run up to a recent increase in the minimum wage. I thought there was an article that reported that as a result of the increase in the minimum wage, a sneaker company was going to move its assembly plant from Guam or the Marshall Islands to the Far East.
My take away was that the local folks, who were getting by on the current lower rate, but were working, were going to be put out of work as a direct result of the increase in the minimum wage.
I was not able to find the thread or the article(s), so I seek your help.
I raised the point with a very liberal boss of mine, and I would like to be able to show him concrete evidence of the unintended consequences of thoughtless government action.
Does anyone have some ideas to point me in the right direction?
Thank you!

Bailing out on us? Can’t say that I blame you ...
Ask Nancy Pelosi.
Don’t forget Samoa where Pelosi runs her sweat shops and exempt her own factories from minimum wage laws.
Guam? Didn’t it tip over?
Guam is going to capsize according to a RAT congress critter, Hank Johnson.....your boss can defend that.....
i thought that was star kist tuna who found it cheaper to build new, updated plants in the US than keep operating the old fashioned way in guam.
And its Samoa that Pelosi likes (StarKist) tuna.
That is why I eat Bumble Bee tuna.

Try it, you will like it.
Also check out Northern Mariana Islands which is where Saipan is. This is a US territory. Marshall Islands are now independant.
Here’s an official government report acknowledging substantial adverse effects of higher minimum wages on employment in Samoa and Mariana Islands.
Impact of Increased Minimum Wages on the Economies of American Samoa and
the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

This private study of Mariana Islands concludes the same:

I haven’t seen the article, but I lived there for 3 1/2 years late 70’s,early 80’s. Suggest you contact the University of Guam,I’m sure they could help you.
Lovely school,by the way.
P.S. Hafa Adai!
LOL
Not ready for Galt’s Gultch yet. Decided to make my stand here
I think you got me pointed in the right direction.
I had forgotten about the Pelosi connection. I thought it was Nike who was pulling out. That may be mentioned in the materials you shared
Thanks again!

Thanks all. The info you provided had information I was looking for and has me looking into the correct territories.
I think I conflated articles about sneakers in Viet Nam, garment making on Samoa, tuna processing, and the fishy Pelosi story.
This is a textbook example of the anti-competetive effect of the minimum wage laws upon the lowest income communities.
I should be more familiar with the geography of the Pacific, but I comfort myself with the fact that I know where to go for help!
Freepers Rule! Thanks again.
