Accused Killer Joran van der Sloot,, Stabs Prison Guard in Escape Attempt
Gather ^ | 2/4/11

Natalie Holloway murder suspect, Joran van der Sloot, has been ominously quiet for quite a while. That's not surprising since he's been languishing in Peru's Miguel Castro Castro prison since June awaiting the completion of the investigation of Stephany Flores's murder. On January 15th however, Van der Sloot suddenly decided to lunge back into the headlines by stabbing a guard and then attempting to hold him hostage in a crazy, and therefore unsuccessful attempt to break out of prison.

According to the National Enquirer, Van der Sloot suddenly "freaked out" when guard, Luis Gavancho, brought a tray of food into his cell. Joran threw the tray against the wall, and when Gavancho tried to subdue him, he stabbed the prison guard in the face with a homemade "shiv." When other guards arrived on the scene, they found Joran holding the bloody Gavancho in a choke hold while "wielding the knife in his free hand." Needless to say, Joran was overpowered and his escape attempt foiled.

And what on earth could have prompted the accused murderer to think he could fight his way out of the infamous Peruvian prison with a bleeding hostage and a homemade shiv? Cocaine, of course. Or as one source explained:

"In his drugged state, he probably imagined he could hold the guard hostage and maybe escape." Right.

Latin American prisons bear notorious reputations for alleged substandard conditions and even human rights violations. If daily life for Miguel Castro prison's regular inmates is pure hell, imagine how horrific it must be for those who have been consigned to the "hole" for punishment. Like Joran van der Sloot.

And it couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

No more trays of food for Joran. Oh well too bad.

Seriously doubt Joran has fifty years ahead of him; not even close. He clearly is asking for ‘it’; but these Guards no doubt; take a certain pleasure in making one ‘wish’ they were dead. Feel no pity for him; but do think I feel sorry for his Mother, however. . or just ‘maybe’. . .

Just shut the cell door and lose the key.

This story is a warning for everyone ~ about a lot of very dangerous situations.

The warning is what it's about ~ not the relative worth of any particular indiidual.

At the same time it sounds like you are one of Joran's fans?

Hmm?!?!?

Something tells me Joran won’t live to be thirty.

Joran seems to like violent sex. I’m certain he’ll get plenty of it in general population.

He needs to be careful - people might get the impression that he’s nuts. Course, that’s probably what he wants the judge to think....

I remember seeing an interview with the warden of the Louisiana State Prison.

He said they had the absolute scum of the earth in the prison. He also mentioned that in general, the murderers were not the worst people in there. BTW, he supported the death penalty.

I think a few like VanDerSloot might make him change his mind. The guy comes across as a complete psychopath with no sense of kindness or responsibility. Nothing matters to him but his own wants or needs.

I note with interest that his father is a Judge. I wonder what he’s doing behind the scene to free his kid.

I hear JOran is singing a new song now a days it’s...

“I kissed a guard and I like it”.

I believe his father, the Judge, passed away awhile back. Daddy could not do anything for him in Peru anyways.

why dont they shoot him while escaping?

Plenty of time for that. He can have a few fall-down accidents first.

I’ve never understood the absolute fascination with the death of one pretty teenager years and years ago. Thousands of people get murdered in the US every year and they don’t come to dominate news coverage.”

I believe it is because it is a new era out there. Parents used to be able to count on a little justice, kids could celebrate senior week safely anywhere nearly, and border countries/islands were not so corrupted that they blew off disappearances in favor of drugs, political favors or cash. At least it seems that way to me. They were more devout people themselves than they are today and cared for the sake of the family to get answers.

And Natalie’s mother happened, thank God, to have the means and wherewithall to take it to Ariba, highlighting not only the corruption, but the danger for dizzy dumb parents to let their seniors go carousing near the border.

Yep, if he makes it fifty years it’ll be a miracle. Like you say, he’ll be around for awhile but he won’t be happy.

“why dont they shoot him while escaping?”

They’re having too much fun with him alive. Let them make his life a HELL (they can do that here), rather than a Club Gitmo life he would have here (or any Western jail).
