Oak trees at Auburn's historic Toomer's Corner poisoned

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn University says someone deliberately poisoned trees at Toomer's Corner, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship on Jan. 10.

The university said in a statement Wednesday that a herbicide commonly used to kill trees was applied "in lethal amounts" to the soil around the two trees, and that they likely can't be saved.

Auburn discovered the poisoning after taking soil samples on Jan. 28, a day after a man called a syndicated radio show based in Birmingham saying he had used the herbicide on the trees.

"The weekend after the Iron Bowl, I went to Auburn, Ala., because I live 30 miles away, and I poisoned the Toomer's trees," the caller told The Paul Finebaum Radio Show, saying he was at the Iron Bowl.

Even if the Radio station didn’t use caller ID, the phone company records would have it, and most likely the police got the records form them. Plus he identified his stupid self as “Al from Daleville”.........

A Facebook profile with the name Harvey Updyke claims to be retired Texas state trooper living in Mobile. The profile photo shows Updyke wearing an Alabama ballcap.

More proof that if there was no sports rivalries, racial differences, or religious differences, etc., people would find some way to hate each other. I think it’s in our nature.

So we ask Jim to delete EVERY thread that isn’t about abortion to make you happy?

Some of us like to read about other things from time to time.

Perhaps you might stay on topic or stay off of threads that aren’t obsessing about abortion.

Why don’t you start a forum that is only about abortion because FR isn’t it.

To: I still care

There are still solutions. Excavate the area completely, and replace the poisoned soil.

...obsessing about abortion.

Interesting response.

I didn't in any way suggest that we shouldn't obsess about a TREE - but perhaps I should have.

Please reread what I said.

My point was simply a plea to keep things in perspective...

The Auburn fans are going to toilet paper a gazebo?

Joking - I have several grandchildren who graduated from Auburn. They aren’t happy.

I think it is a sign of serious mental derangement and total disconnect from priorities that so many people take professional and college sports so seriously.

There is something wrong with grown men getting so excited over watching other grown men chase a ball in the grass.

The people immediately took cuttings to preserve the lineage of the tree and horticulturalists worked hard to try to save the tree. I don’t know if they were successful.

They were. It was 1989, the "Texas Treaty" tree; two-thirds of it died, but it apparently survived by removing all of the soil and power-washing the roots, along with injections of something to stop the poisoning. I read about this just this morning at Expert: Toomer’s trees may stand a chance, but the article has suddenly switched to subscription-only.

Winter-time dormancy means there may be hope for the Toomer's trees, too. War Eagle!

Mine was simply a plea to not post on every thread like some of you do that abortion is worse than whatever the thread topic.

This is a thread about trees not abortion. Keep it in perspective.
