Mercy. He won’t watch Fox News but he’ll watch Pawn Stars.

I Love that show. Though it is staged like all reality shows are. You don’t just walk into a pawn shop and not wonder what all the multiple cameras, sound equipment, and light reflectors are all about. Still fun to watch.

“The trouble is, these sellers are not into the delayed gratification thing. They want cash and want it now. Probably to go party at the casio or pay off debt incurred by doing the same.”

Exactly correct. They have to pay Louie the loan shark in cash TODAY.

He needs a serious attitude adjustment, he is completely disrectful to his elders on the show. If I were his Grandfather I would fire him, make him get a real job and learn some humility.

I'm sure they make a good living, but probably not so much as you suppose. They seem to pay about half of what they think something will sell for. Then they've got overhead to pay out of that... store rent, wages, bills... their margins probably are pretty thin.

Not only all that, but when they buy something, (especially bigger items) it tends to just sit on their shelves for a while. Making no money. Some items may have a quick turnaround, but alot of them are just money sitting on their shelves, doing nothing.

They do. People refuse their offers all the time. The pawn guys also sometimes just don't make offers on things that they think they can't sell easily, nomatter the price. They also don't buy super-big ticket items either. Tying that much cash (like $500K) up in one item is a huge risk if it doesn't sell right away.

Yep, there's several times I've seen people refuse their offers, or they refuse to make an offer. Also, there are a couple times where Rick tears into Corey/Chumley for making a large purchase, because its hard to sell/make money off of.

Some items may have a quick turnaround,

On one of the shows, they mentioned that there is a law that requires them to hold anything they buy for a fixed period before they are permitted to sell it. I can't remember how long it was, but it struck me as a long time; either three or six months.

When they say "put it in the back," that's what they are talking about. It sits back there until it can be legally sold.

In showbiz, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

The problem with ebay is that you're essentially buying something without the chance to physically examine and handle the object. That makes people less willing to pay top dollar for it.

I generally use eBay for things where condition doesn't matter, such as tickets, or electronics still in the box, durable goods, items with a serial/model number, etc. The pawn shop tends to sell speciality items where in-person examination and buying from a reputable business will be more highly valued.

“The Old Man is a big Democrat. Thinks FDR was great.”

I don’t see that having anything to do with it. My Dad who is about the same age as the “Old Man” also thought FDR was a good President - yet he went to his grave a solid Republican and probably one of Rush Limbaugh’s biggest fans in the early years of his show.

They don't screw anybody. They make an offer that people are free to refuse. People who sell stuff to pawn shops are people that don't want (for whatever reason) to take the time and effort it takes to sell it on e-bay or an auction. Of course they'll get more there, but they won't sell it ~right now~. There's just nothing wrong with that

Notice the deal is often sealed when he tells them CASH.

Back in my day, tough meant something.

Today, if you are fat and obese, with an ear ring and a shaved head, wear cargo shorts 24/7 and a baseball hat backwards, you can be considered tough.

This guy is a punk and wouldn't last 5 minutes back in the 50's and 60's.

Yep.

I noticed that an old Charlie Sheen movie was on ("The Arrival") over the weekend...no coincidence that.

In fact, I watched it.

Ever watch the Pawn show from Detroit on another channel??

Compare the customers and get a good laugh.

There is a big difference between a guy wanting money for a bet in Las Vegas and a ghetto goon pawning what he probably stole last night.

These people are such douche bags that the owner of a gun store refused to discount guns further after already discounting them and it got so bad he threw them out.

He wouldn't sell them the guns for any price.

It is one thing to barter a bit, it is something else to make both an ass and a pest of yourself.
