LAKELAND, Fla. – Olive Garden restaurants are making changes after a toddler was served alcoholic sangria instead of orange juice at a Florida location.

News of the incident comes after an Applebee's in Michigan accidently served a margarita to another toddler.

Orlando, Fla.-based Darden Restaurants says the mix-up happened March 31 in Lakeland.

Jill VanHeest says she took her 2-year-old son Nikolai to the hospital after his eyes turned red and dilated and he began acting up. She said he was given fluids and released a couple hours later with no lasting effects.

I bet he didn’t complain about teething for a few hours. That being said, people use to think me odd when I would take a sip out of the cup before my kids drank it. I just wanted to make sure it was apple juice!

I agree. And the odd thing is that the restaurant justly SHOULD pay for the medical bills and maybe a few weeks’ monitoring of the kid. But will the inevitable lawsuit be limited to that? Nooooo. They’ll sue for millions.

How hard can it be for restaurants to have items like fruit juices and milk located at the regular soda fountain/drink station, in additon to the bar area, so that wait-staff can prepare and serve childrens’ beverages without having to place a bar order?

I wonder why the parents didn’t notice. Sangria and OJ are not the same color.

Why doesn’t anybody ever give ME a margarita when I order a soft drink?

Sealed, opaque sippy cup is my guess.

They should just be glad they didn’t feed pork to a muslim by mistake, because then instead of apologizing they’d probably be picking up pieces of the waiter.

I saw the Mom and kid on FOX this morning. It was a little clear sippy cup. Not very big.

Stupid mistake by the restaurant, but this was being made a bigger deal than it really was.

That kid was fine and he was certainly fine on that show today. The kid was really cute, and when Gretchen asked him about the hospital he got a mean face going. Hilarious.

This Mom was saying “oh, he may have permanent damage”.

That was ridiculous. He probably could have more lasting damage from medications he has taken. It was orange sangria, not 100 proof vodka.

Then it wouldn't have been a "mistake" if it were put in a sippy cup by the waitress.

Glad the toddler wasn’t hurt. Doesn’t seem like anything malicious, just a one and a million human error. Since there were no lasting injuries, I am categorizing this one as “Sh*t Happens”.

If the kid can use the drink as an excuse for this type of behavior, why can't I?
