HBO Renews 'Game Of Thrones' For Second Season After Premiere Airing
Deadline Hollywood ^ | 04/19/2011 | Nellie Andreeva

Like it did with Boardwalk Empire in September, HBO just renewed Game of Thrones moments after the ratings for the premiere episode were in. For Game of Thrones, those ratings were solid, not great. But, also like with Boardwalk Empire, HBO invested in elaborate sets and designs in re-creating the world from George R.R. Martin's books, so a second season was considered a sure thing. And while HBO brass pay attention to ratings, the numbers have never been the deciding factor in the network's renewal decisions as proven by the pickups of shows like Treme, Bored to Death and In Treatment. “We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” HBO's head of programming Michael Lombardo said

While watching the premiere episode, I couldn't get over how "big" the production appeared. It looked like a movie, and an expensive movie at that.

HBO has some shows that seem to be done on the cheap, like "True Blood". But they have some others that have enormous production values, like "Boardwalk Empire" and now this.

It's too bad the Ayn Rand novel didn't get this kind of treatment. It would have worked much better as a miniseries like this, rather than a theatrical movie.

I thought it was pretty good, myself. But then again, I like Sean Bean.

I was intrigued by the premiere. I was also a bit miffed about needing a score card to memorize the names of all these characters and cities and territories. I will continue to watch Game of Thrones. It would help to have an intro, in the style of the Lord of the Rings movies.

I caught the show just by chance and like it. I’m hooked!

I liked the premiere, and will continue to watch. And I’m delighted to know that Boardwalk Empire will return.

"But then again, I like Sean Bean"

Yeah, I do to. He seems to do good work in every project he does, even when the project sucks. And, he's perfect for these period/fantasy pieces.

I hardly think the comparison is valid. Those shows have no sets to speak of.

See if this helps with the place names.

It would have been nice if they could show a location tile, or name tile when presenting new characters or places. I have absolutely no idea what any of their names are.

I didn’t understand what was going on and even the exposed flesh made me yawn. Filming done mainly at night and in daylight with strong filters bores the snot out of me. I am not interested but I know that there is a huge game playing audience out there and this is but another offering to those fans.

I don’t think it is based on a game, but the series of books, Song of Fire and Ice. I don’t like them, but they are not linear like a game, at least.

Count your blessings, if this works, they may step up to Wheel of Time, which has 1,800 characters with at least one line of dialogue.

There’re characters named Stark and a place called Iron Man’s Bay?

The 1st episode was good but not great, still, most of great stuff from the books happen later and hopefully the show can pack the same emotional impact as the books.

If you want to have any hope of enjoying this series, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, watch the appr. 10 min introductory film with interviews of the cast, producers, etc.

A greater collection of stupidity and stupid statements I have seldom seen/heard.
