Vanity - were did these people come from?

I was just channel surfing and came across a show where a bunch of 25-35 somethings were talking about the royal wedding. They were particularly laughing at the part where everyone sang Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehovah - maybe one of the most recognizable hymn tunes I can think of.

http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/g/u/guideme.htm

To them it was some mysterious "obscure" ritual song. And they projected this attitude on the audience saying nobody knows the words, look at Elton John trying to sing this thing. I watched the same scene and thought how nice all these diverse people were enjoying something they all held in common. Whether or not anyone of them believed what they were singing it's part of their common heritage.

So I just shake my head at the smirking, giggling conversation these TV people were having. And these are American. But it's like these people and I have NOTHING in common. It's like they came from some alien culture that grew up completely independently from the one I come from.

My grandmother was the regular church organist from the time she was 12 years old till she was in her 80s.

I don’t know the song and I went to Sunday school.

The thing I find more strange is all this American attention to a royal wedding. That really is a lack of knowledge of history. Our founding fathers are spinning in their graves.

I don’t remember that particular hymn but there are plenty of others I do know well like Onward Christian Soldiers. (My grandfather’s favorite)

I paid attention because I am fascinated by the detail and precision and the participation. We have little in our society that matches it. I would say SOME exceptions were the funerals for John Kennnedy and Ronald Reagan.

I have a reputation for humming or quietly whistling hymns around the office. But I have to admit, I am less familiar with GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH than I am with many others. I'm now adding it to my repetoir. Thanks.

On the basic subject, I heard today how many people got saved in our church last week. The service I attended had an incredible response, as did the other ones. But our pastor was explaining that a number of people commented they had no idea that Easter had anything to do with the Resurrection of Jesus. He discussed how we should never assume people understand even the basics.

keep in mind... the whole reason the show was on ridiculing the royal wedding was because 0 and mo were not invited. therefore, ridicule and make fun.

these people are not my countrymen. they may live in my town, that doesn’t mean they are part of my nation. they’re an occupying force

That is a beautiful hymn. It has been going over and over through my mind ever since Friday. That was a Christ centered ceremony. - Barack & Michelle would have been like fish out of water and would have sucked all the air out of the room. It was best they weren’t invited.

Yes, we sang that song in church as recently as a few years ago.

I agree: it seems like this latest crop of public-schooled, unchurched, politically-correct, hoplophobic, ever-fornicating pseudo-adults have nothing in common with religious Americans like us from earlier generations.

We must recapture the youth if our country is to be saved.

Another reason why I can’t stand most people my age today. They are too liberal and/or too stupid and too secular. I have NOTHING in common with most young people.

That is one of the things about the US that saddens me. I was once in a truly awful country and I got the military govt to grant permission for a film crew to shoot at a restricted location because I knew a very old popular song of that country. It was something in their culture that succeeding generations continue to know. We don't have anything like that.

The music at the wedding was wonderful. It is so good to know that there is some place in the world, even if it only is expressed once in a long while, where tradition is not dead.

If you didn’t listen to “Jerusalem” and get goose bumps, you aren’t alive.

The ignorance you describe isn’t by accident but by design. And that is frightening.

We have little in our society that matches it for a very good reason. Don’t forget that all that hoopla was paid for by the taxpayers. I don’t like the Obama’s taking trips on taxpayer money, why would I be delighted with the royals?
