Dallas cops keep $2,000 found by honest teen

DALLAS — Dallas will keep $2,000 found by a teenager in a parking lot last February.

The money will go into the city's general fund — not back to Plano high school student Ashley Donaldson, who found the cash in an envelope at the Pavillion Shopping Center in North Dallas.

"I don't regret making the decision I did," she said. "I feel proud of myself for giving the money back. It's one of the biggest decisions of my life."

The 15-year-old Shepton High School student spotted the money on the ground and took it to a nearby Chase Bank.

Over the last three months, the bank and Dallas police have tried to find the owner, but have had no luck.

On Tuesday, police said under a new city policy, the unclaimed money will go into Dallas' general fund — not back to the person who found it, as in years past.

"We appreciate your honesty," said Dallas police spokesman Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse. "We're going to put the money to good use. It's not going to be wasted, but put to good use for the City of Dallas."

That's not the answer Ashley Donaldson had been hoping for. "I was thinking about a car," she confessed.

Somebody had to contribute to the donut fund and they found a volunteer! Just think of how many boxes of donuts 2 Gs are going to buy.

I’ll take a jelly donut if he doesn’t mind! LOL!

A local Walmart store had a similar policy. When my son found a wallet containing $40, Walmart returned only the unclaimed wallet to the boy saying that the money must have been donated to “The Children’s Miracle Network.” yeah, right

And Ashley, if you or your parents ever get a phone call asking for a contribution for the Policeman’s Benevolent Fund, tell them you’ve already been benevolent enough.

Since the $2000 is going to city taxes/funding, he should deduct it from his federal taxes

"THey said to contact them after a certain amount of time passed if the owner didn’t claim it. "

I guess from now on everyone should contact the police and give a description of what they have found. If they find the owner, then the police are welcome to contact you when the true owner is identified and you will turn it over to the correct owner.

Unfriggen believable! I am one that would turn the item over, but now I am going to have second thoughts on this one......

Nah, the city will probably notify the IRS and send her a 1099-MISC at the end of the year so Uncle Barack can get some taxes on that $2000 she didn’t get to keep. After all, it was briefly in her possession, so it must be taxable income!

I’m sure they will find some form of TAX the child has to pay during this money transfer.

AS it turned out, it WAS another payoff.
Curious that NO ONE claimed it-—if it was legitimately lost, couldn’t someone put together enough proof with corroborating evidence to be able to claim it?
Leads me to believe it was part of a drug deal.
Of course Old Man Potter could’ve lost it after he stole it from Thomas Mitchell in It’s a Wonderful Life.

The problem that can arise in a situation like this if that money is being tracked, you might be caught spending tainted (or even forged) money.

Good grief. How utterly offensive. It should have gone back to the teen. This is gross. I hope people protest this crap.

What a great memory you have, to remember Thomas Mitchell as the actor playing the doofus uncle of George Bailey. That Potter proved himself to be utterly wicked by keeping the money. Would it not have been a crime for him to do so?

They finally said “We don’t have it. It was auctioned off along with other lost and found or confiscated items.” Period.

She should have retained a lawyer. The person who bought it at auction, if the story about its disposition is even true, is in possession of stolen goods. Anyone in the chain of custody through the auctioneer should be indicted.

I live out in the country and have heard there are drug dealers out here. Local inmates work on the garbage trucks and clean-up right-of-ways around here. One day they were working cleaning the right-of-ways and one inmate found a package in the road ditch in front of my house, it was $30,000. He could gotten away with keeping it except him and another inmate got into an arguement about it(greed). Man I wish it had been grass cutting day and I had found it.

Yea, that's the way to do it. There's absolutely no reason to give custody to the police.

Kudos to the Teen for doing the right thing.

Burn in Hell to the city’s rulers who have decided that everything belong to the city, and they’re going to put that money to “good use,” as the government knows far better how to properly spend money than some stupid subject who’ll probably put some into savings for his (hopefully stellar) future and inject some REAL stimulus for the economy.

Remember, the government knows how to spend your money better than you do.

Reading some other stories on this, and it’s pretty clear they’re in damage control mode now. The story is going viral and the mayor’s office is distancing themselves. There are also reports that some good samaritans are donating money to an account set up by Chase for the girl.

Another example of the grasping bastards of government. No doubt they were thinking of the possibility of someone finding a suitcase of drug money and feeling greedy about it.
