This amounts to mass murder.

We should be outlawing all pharmaceuticals, not natural cures.

It's hard to be pleasant and give 4x forms of ID when yer blinded by a sinus attack. Those pills are a miracle.

If you need help for sinus issues, there are two other options which our family has found to work VERY well with little or no side effect (personal experience here).

One is guaifenesin (Brand name of Mucinex). My allergist prescribes it for his patients with serious sinus issues at 1200 mg twice a day. Both he and a couple pharmacists have told me that it's a very old and very safe medicine with very few to no side effects.

We've found it to not leave you as spacey as pseudoephedrine. The generic is MUCH cheaper than the brand name, FWIW.

The other is a natural supplement called Fenugreek. It's a spice which also thins the mucous and two of those twice a day help clear congestion and as far we've been able to tell, with no side effects.

It's the best smelling herbal supplement I've ever encountered. It smells like maple syrup and when we researched it, discovered that it is actually used in making artificial maple syrup.

A friend told us that he tried both the mucinex and fenugreek and found terrific relief. He was right. I have never heard of any indications that you can't do both. It hasn't hurt us yet.

Claritin D has the ephedrine in it.

That’s likely what has to be reported for being sold.

If you really are serious about clearing out your sinuses, there is one and only one choice:

Sniff a mix of powered cayenne and powedered garlic.

It’ll be hot for a few minutes, but after doing it for a few days, your sinuses are clear for ever.

“Claritin D has the ephedrine in it.”

that would certainly do it. I prefer my decongestants on the side, that way I can adjust dosages more easily. Generally, none at all...

I've always had bad results with taking more than one or two doses of decongestant. I get a really bad rebound effect, usually by the 3rd or 4th dose. May be because I used to use them very heavily.

yeah. If you really like that sort of thing, and your sinuses really need cleaned out, try two fingers of your favorite whiskey, and 2 fingers of tabasco sauce, with or without ice. No chaser, though. That’ll clear you out, and it won't burn out the lining of your sinuses.

Or you can try Meyer's Special Dip, from one of the Travis McGee stories of John D. McDonald. Moisten dry chinese mustard with tabasco sauce until you can use chips to pick it up...

It will clear your sinuses, too, and no damage to them.

No promises about what either of these remedies will do to your stomach and the rest of your digestive system, though.

Most of the the drug stores have a house brand of Guifen cough syrup, relatively cheaply. I use it myself. Works well. Tussin is one of them, that being what’s sitting by my bed right now.

I’m going to have to find some fenugreek and try it.

Maybe you could try the stuff we use that I mentioned in post 83. It’s not the same as the ephedrine and I don’t recall that anyone in the family has had rebound effects from it.

You can get it in pill form now. It's generally marketed as mucous relief for the generics, but it's Mucinex for the brand name.

Outrageously expensive considering it's so old and doesn't have the R&D to pay for. That's why we go with the generics.

FWIW, the Mucinex is 600 mg tablets and the generics are 400 mg. You have to take that into account when looking at the cost effectiveness, but I've found the generics to be cheaper even with having to buy more.

And you don't have to taste them as you swallow them. The syrups are NASTY.

I’m working with what I can afford. Right now, that’s what I have on hand already. Mucinex is pretty expensive, and I’ve not seen a generic for it as pills. I’ve got probably nearly a quart of various forms of Guaifen syrup here, so that is what we’re using. It does help. And it does tasted nasty, too. We generally follow it with a green-tea chaser, helps wash the taste out...
