Will Rogers was quite the cowboy, with all the wisdom of simple, honest folk. He died in a 1935 plane crash in Alaska with his best friend Wylie Post. Rogers was probably the greatest political sage this country ever has known. ~~~~~ His words still ring with common sense today. Simple but Brilliant and full of truths! ~~~~~ 1. Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco. 2. Never kick a cow chip on a hot day. 3. There are two theories to arguing with a woman. Neither works. 4. Never miss a good chance to shut up. 5. Always drink upstream from the herd. 6. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. 7. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back into your pocket. 8. There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves. 9. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. 10. If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there. 11. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back. 12. After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut. ~~~~~ ABOUT GROWING OLDER... First ~ Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Second ~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved. Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra. Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top. Seventh ~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Eighth ~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been. Ninth ~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. Tenth ~ Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf. And, finally ~ If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you are old. Will Rogers

I always greet visitors who fly in to OKC with this little known fact. We are the only city with two airports named after people who died in plane crashes. And it was the same crash. (Will Rogers World Airport and Wiley Post Airport)

My Daughter SIL and Grandchildren live in Claremore OK. That is where he called home tho he was technically born a few miles away on a ranch near a place in the road called Oolagah.
He did have a good sense of humor. One of the odd things I learned is Claremore is in Rogers County but it was not named after Will. It was named after his Father.
His Father served as a Captain in the Cherokee mounted rifles, CSA. I noticed his uniform is on display at the Will Rogers museum in Claremore.

And don’t forget these gems:
Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.
Our constitution protects aliens, drunks and U.S. Senators. {And I am guessing in some cases they might all three be the same person.}
This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.
There ought to be one day— just one— when there is open season on senators. {Will said it, not me. Back when you could actually say something like that without winning a visit from the Secret Service.}

Wisdom, not intellect is what America needs in a President.
Sadly, the facist pig obama is neither.......sadder still, very FEW politicians understand the value of wisdom over intellect.

Will was often very perceptive but, quotable insights to the contrary, he was a loyal promoter of the New Deal, including during its worst early phase.
To: Captain Kirk
Will wasn’t perfect but he was funny and insightful. Oklahoma was a hard place to be and not support some kind of relief back in those days.
That said, Will was spending an awful lot of time in places other than Oklahoma back then. He was big time but still managed to keep in mind where he came from.
He was still a pretty good guy.

You are absolutely correct. But hey, no one is perfect. My own mother, as conservative as the day is long, thought FDR was the best president we ever had until the day she died.

Wold-Chamberlain Field (MSP) was named after two WWI aviators who were shot down in that war - Ernest Groves Wold and Cyrus Foss Chamberlain.

Don’t forget this Will Rogers gem. “I’m not a member of any organized political party. I’m a Democrat”...

Interestingly, when helping my son with his homework some years ago I learned that Pennsylvania is not named after William Penn. It is named after William Penn’s father.

Well....we share that. Both my parents were culturally conservative and very religious but each held FDR in the highest regard. Having said that, Rogers role in promoting the New Deal, in his most fascist phase, was not a small blemish on record.

He was a great man, but he had an excellent publicist who was dedicated to him, and after Roger’s death he simply continued on, as before. He was extremely witty.
A lot of the quotes come from well after the man had died.

You’ll probably like Kin Hubbard also. Google him — I loaned my only Hubbard book years ago and never got it back so I can’t give you an ISBN.

Yup. Woody Guthrie, another native son, had a similar problem. “This land is our land” isn’t exactly the feel-good anthem it is billed as.

"Yup. Woody Guthrie, another native son, had a similar problem. This land is our land isnt exactly the feel-good anthem it is billed as."
You're right. I'm a big fan of Woody's music but he was an out and out socialist. No getting around it. "This Land is Your Land" was written as a sort of answer to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America". One verse that is no longer sung is this one:
"In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me?"
When Woody said "this land is your land, this land is my land", he really meant it. We all own it in a socialistic sense. No private property.
