MIAMI (CBS4) – City of Miami Police are desperate to find a mother and her five children after she allegedly beat up a Department of Children & Families case worker coming to take away the kids.

Authorities say DCF worker Lovern Alleyne-Babb, along with another co-worker, went to the home on the 400 block of Northwest 6th Street on April 8 with orders to remove the children from the home.

Once inside, police say the children’s mother, Caneema Atkins, lunged at Alleyne-Babb punching her in the nose and stomping on her eyeglasses.

If Social Services have to take children away for reasons such as beating a child, starving one etc... perhaps it may be wise to bring law enforcement with you. I thought this was done usually by protocol?

“After the attack, police say Atkins grabbed the children and fled the home in an unknown direction. She is considered to be dangerous.”

Dangerous to a government employee, apparently. They have not established (in this article) that she is a danger to her children.

While this may have been an overreaction or evidence that DFC was right, it could just as easily be exactly the right response.

5 Children, that’s a pretty big paycheck they are trying to take away from that woman.

Five babies under the age of five and no mention of daddy. How sad.

Back in 1973, the DC Police Department relieved Social Services of their responsibilities in the child abuse/neglect area. As a newly-minted Sergeant, I was assigned to that duty. Snatching kids out of a home can be a hairy experience. More than once, I wished I was back walking a beat in the projects.

A friend of mine is a social worker in a similar job here in Los Angeles County. He hates his job. Overworked, and underpaid. It is thankless, sometimes dangerous, and painful work.

They have not established (in this article) that she is a danger to her children.

they also don't say who the orders came from. was it just a DCF manager's sign off or an actual court order?
i don't trust children's service workers one bit, they do pretty much whatever they want on often unconstitutional grounds, and there's rarely any trial, parents are presumed guilty.
if there's sufficient evidence to remove children, there should be a uniformed officer bearing a warrant also there to arrest the parent.

I can only imagine that anything “domestic” can get dangerous and quickly. Even in the worst abuse cases (starving, beating, burning with cigarettes, rape), the perpetrator feels that it is their “right” to these kids. They already have shown an attitude toward violence. What is probably the saddest are the little kids screaming for their mother... the same one who hurt them. I am sure those days are still with you in your nightmares.

During my thirteen months with the Marines in Vietnam, I saw things...
In no way did that prepare me for seeing what a parent can do to a child. Am I allowed to say that it pi$$ed me off?

This is DCF. The word wise is not in their vocabulary.

Absolutely. I have no sympathy for anyone, parent included, to hurt a child. I have a friend who use to volunteer as a children’s advocate (notice I used past tense). Her first case involved going to an emergency room and seeing a toddler with cigarette burns all over his little body. Social Services would “investigate later” and the hospital had no other choice than to release this baby back to his abuser. Well, my friend got so infuriated that she punched the woman in the face. Needless to say, she was asked to longer volunteer.

What evidence do we have that this mother abused or neglected her children?

I’m too lazy to see if she has a record. If anyone wants to check, the Dade County Clerk of Court public access site will show any past and current charges against her.

The article simply isn’t forthcoming with information. In fact, child abuse cases are rarely reported unless they are severe: children found dead in a freezer, homicide, etc... We rarely read the cases like a toddler with venereal warts or a baby with an STD. There are both cases: one where Social Services completely over-reacts to something like bible study and the cases that make us want to vomit. It is that simple.

That’s why the MPDC was put in charge of those cases. The hospitals were required to call the police, not the social workers. We had the power of arrest - and used it :)

“Unfortunately, this is something that our investigators face every day. They walk into these houses, they don’t have a badge, they don’t have a gun, they have their ID. They come in there into situations which may be dangerous,” said Lissette Valdes-Valle, a spokesperson for DCF.

This is directly from the story.

Well WTF does she expect. If some plainclothed so-called government employee with what may or may not be a valid ID tried to push their way into my home and couldn't produce a valid warrant to enter the premise, I probably would deliver a royal a$$kicking myself.
