Feds seize elderberry juice from Kansas winery

Federal authorities have seized bottles and drums of elderberry juice concentrate from a Kansas winery, contending that the company's claims of its benefits for treating various diseases make the product a drug. (snip)

The government contends the juice concentrate is an unapproved and misbranded drug because the winery claims it is used to treat diseases such as the flu, cancer and AIDS.

"Products with unapproved disease claims are dangerous because they may cause consumers to delay or avoid legitimate treatments, Dara Corrigan, the FDA's associate commissioner for regulatory affairs, said in a news release. "The FDA is committed to protecting consumers from unapproved products on the market."

Why not simply tell them to stop making the claim?

I don't need your help. Now run along to the lunch with the drug company lobbyists and collect your protection money.

Yes we need more government. Our nation is insolvent and we pay govt officials to seize elderberry wine.
Nice. I’m sure the Founders had this in mind.

“I don’t need your help.”

Exactly. Just leave us alone. I’ll decide what I want to take.

Snake-oil claims? Yet, the government keeps saying they can control the weather...

This is so big brother that it is scary.

People were copper bracelets, sleep with magnets, take mega vitamins, buy organic vegetables, go to ‘holistic’ centers, etc. etc. etc. As a doc, I don’t believe anything is therapeutic unless I see data, but it’s not the government’s right to prevent people from using these things.

It’s also not the government’s right to force people to take things for which there is data justifying use. It’s called freedom. I once lived in a country premised on freedom.

Fed’s war on food
Fed’s war on Cheerios
Fed’s war on Boeing
Fed’s war on Elderberry juice

Too bad there is no war on spending.
It is ALMOST as if we had not voted at all in November!

Wyldewood Cellars owner John Brewer said his company changed the labels as the FDA had requested in 2006.

maybe they didn't anticipate the hope and change.

“Products with unapproved disease claims are dangerous because they may cause consumers to delay or avoid legitimate treatments”

The legitimate treatments may not always be better for you.

I’d swear some of these home remedies are FAR better than the stuff the FDA has approved, like cloves of garlic in the ear to take away infection, or a raw potato to relieve heart burn. WHEN will the gov’t LEAVE US ALONE, folks, it’s time for another Civil War uprising.

Gee, it's so HARD to find federal spending we could cut and keep our nation solvent.
Hmmm, where to start?

Wasn’t it Elderberry wine that the Aunts used to disguise the poison in Arsenic and Old Lace? :)

You got that right ! Have you seen in the commercials the side affects from some of the legitimate treatments ?
I could never figure how the side-effect of an anti-depressant could be thoughts of suicide.
