(Reuters) - An Apple Inc (AAPL.O) store employee has started a union in a rare move at a company known for its near-fanatical following and cutting-edge mystique.

Cory Moll, a part-time employee at an Apple store in San Francisco, is working to form a union to fight for better wages and benefits and to address what he says are unfair practices in the company's glass-and-steel retail showrooms.

I remember a documentary on the demise of the Studebaker Corp that had as a base premise that the UAW used this #5 auto company to force industry-wide agreements upon the other auto companies. Going into the Great Depression, Studebaker had a paternalistic view of it’s workforce and strove to keep employees even when car sales could not support the load. Even through the early 50s, it still had the highest wages in the US Industry. The UAW / Walter Reuther used a strategy of striking one manufacturer to force matching wages throughout the unionized factories. When Studebaker sales faltered, no kindness was shown for past good treatment and the company, founded to build wagons in 1852, died in the 1960s.

Jobs is a big lib, so watching his response will be interesting. I’m guessing he’s gonna be a hypocrite.

Jobs is a hypocrite.

He will fight any unionization attempt.

A union would kill Apple.

Just like he is two faced about the anti-trust issues with Microsoft.

There was a very funny vignette from Steve Job's appearance before the Cupertino City Council about building their new "iSpaceship" building there on June 7th. After Mr Jobs went through the [obligatory California] description of how ecological friendly this project would be, one council member hinted/asked for Apple to furnish free WiFi for the city. Jobs, wearing his capitalist hat, both mentioned the taxes Apple was paying and that there was also a location in Mountainview. He also offered to provide free WiFi in exchange for no taxes. The council member shut-up on that riposte.

It must be strange in the upper echelons of Apple at times - they are obviously Californian libs and they even have the Gore-acle on their Board of Directors, but when they see the anti-capitalist movement of the current left, does it even twinge?

Well I always said every man has a right to be stupid.

to fight for better wages and benefits and to address what he says are unfair practices in the company's glass-and-steel retail showrooms.

“Every slave has with in him the means to end his slavery.”

Don’t like it there? QUIT!

Fire him...

I thought FReepers were educated.

You people obviously do not understand how our legal system is tilted totally in favor of unions. It ties the hands of capitalists and, in some cases, even silencing them.

If you fire someone who is trying to form a union, it is default judgement against you.

Union installed. No vote. No questions asked.

Please THINK before posting.

Torn.

I am not a fan of unions. At the same time would I love a union to harass liberal, elitist, humanitarian, we-are-so-superior-over-everyone Apple? The ironic paradox is almost too tantalizing to say no to.

Ah, yes, I almost forgot, Algore, the great hypocrite, who warns us against rising sea levels, yet purchases a mansion on ocean-front property.

The "Green" capitalist buys carbon-offsets to appease his liberal guilt!

I DID NOT say fire him for trying to start a union. There are always other reasons why you can fire him. You’d be a fool to come out and say, You’re fired for trying to start a union. You’ve just got to be a little creative.

“That is quite illegal and would net Apple a multi-million fine. But, Apple could inform workers that should they go union, they will lose ALL benefits and will fight every union proposal. Let them strike since you can almost never make up the losses incurred by a strike.

Or....move to Hecho en Mexico.”

Amazing we have a government that cannot run anything dictating policy to the productive,I would make that my job to find a way to for these Insects to be very uncomfortable.
