Stuff...

Former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine has criticised Lewis Hamilton's recent on- and off-track behaviour. The Northern Irishman said: "I'm a genuine Lewis fan - he's the only guy in F1 at the moment worth watching - but I think he's lost the plot. I don't think he's surrounded by the best people he could be, and I think he's lost respect for the other drivers." Irvine added that his former team-mate Michael Schumacher "has just lost his talent". (Autosport magazine)

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh has promised his drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button that the team will work tirelessly at the factory to ensure they have a car to challenge championship leader Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull. "We're now into the heart of the season and need to ensure we're regularly delivering performance to the car," said Whitmarsh. "We've shown time and time again this is one of our key strengths, and I'm confident we can continue to deliver."

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has urged Felipe Massa to reproduce his determined performance at the Canadian Grand Prix on a regular basis. "In Canada he did a great job because he didn't give up, even in the last few centimetres of the race," said Domenicali. "That is what I want to see from him from now up until the end of the season. It's very important for him, but also for the team." The Brazilian finished sixth in Montreal.

Three Austin citizens have filed a lawsuit that threatens the 2012 United States Grand Prix. The trio want to prevent plans to use $25m (£15.6m) of public money from the Texas state's Major Event Trust Fund to cover the race fee demanded by Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone.

Force India chief Vijay Mallya has warned his drivers Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil against overenthusiastic driving after the duo both picked up drive-through penalties for separate incidents in Canada, which blew their chances of scoring points.

I think LewHam has been totally disoriented without Uncle Ron around to hover over him. Button (always underrated, underestimated and one of my favorites) has shown himself to be the adult on the team and was poised to take Monaco if the red flag hadn’t let Vettel get fresh tires. Well, OK, Alonso was in a better position to win Monaco, but still....

We’ve entered the Crap Zone where Fox covers the races instead of Speed, which is bad enough....

You wouldn't if you were driving on it! LOL. Most people get confused by the name and think it's somewhere near Nürnberg (Nuremberg), Bavaria (as if it were 'Nürnbergring'). Actually it's in the Eifel mountains between Cologne and Belgium. I try to get a couple of dozen 'tourist laps' in every year. Great fun.

My brain wasn't cogitating on all cylinders. I was perplexed by this weekends EU Grand Prix at Valencia, and July 24th's German Grand Prix at Nürburgring. I was starin' at the track wondering what the heck is that? That's not Circuit de Catalunya! And, no, its not. They already ran that one. And the Valencia course is new, i.e., since 2007.

So when you mentioned LM endurance at Nürburgring this weekend, I noticed the German Grand Prix weekend 24 Jul was also there. So when I looked at that track, I said: what the heck did they do to Hockenheimring???? That's because Nürburgring isn't Hockenheim. What I didn't know was they alternate the German Grand Prix between Nürburgring and Hockenheimring each year.

I'm familiar with German Grand Prix running at Hockenheimring and the EU Grand Prix at Nürburgring (the way it was in the 2002 season). That's the stock scenario in my patched F1 2002 EA Sports race-sim.

So, just, like, ignore me. I'm just so confused.

is there a speed limit?

Nope (other than engine power), except for a few hundred yards close to Breidscheid IIRC, where there is an exit from/to the track. Most just ignore that, but I've heard of people getting a ticket there.

The problem on days with a lot of traffic is that there'll be cars, bikes, real tourists, and the occasional tour bus all going around at vastly different speeds. And most corners are 'blind'...

Some good websites:

Ben Lovejoy had dozens of photo-essays about his trips to the Ring but it looks like he's removed them. www.nurburgring.org.uk

JW still has his stories up: www.jwhubbers.nl/ring/ (the 'RingBunny' -story at site - photographer who took that snap of me).

Funny personal annecdote. Euro Porsche 928 meeting a few years ago. Hotel about 50 miles from the Ring. Had a US friend as a passenger. Getting back to the hotel from the Ring in the evening, all by way of secondary roads and reenacting the rallye Monte Carlo, he said "wow, I can't believe they don't have speed limits on these roads.' Ahem. :-) (Just no cops out there...)
