I used to play an international Massive Multiplayer game online that was based in Europe. All of us Americans would chat about American Sports on the game chat channel live while playing the game. For some reason this annoyed the hell out of the Europeans because there were way more Americans playing than Euros and they could care less about American Sports.

Then by way of retaliation a bunch of the Euros started chatting about the Tour de France. Most of the Americans had no clue about it but a few of us knew a little.

Three or four of us private messaged each other to see if we could have some fun with the situation.

American 1: Tour de France what is that? Some sort of Vacation Holiday Package?

American 2: No its some sort of train trip to see pasty white Europeans laying around on France's dirty Beaches.

Angry Frenchman: No you American twit it is a bicycle race. Typical you know nothing of what is going on outside your little redneck American World.

American 3: Oh Yeah I remember now.

American 1: Yeah, its where all the cyclists from Europe Compete in a big long Bike Race.

American 2: Yeah they compete to see who gets to finish in 2nd Place behind Lance Armstrong.

Needless to say afterwords there was much profanity and flame wars on the chat channel for the duration of the Tour.

hehehehe

REPOST, please excuse me (This is to help me keep myself on the right thread!)

The thing I like most about July is waking up to Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin. I don't think there are any color commentators in any sport who can compare with them for talent, knowledge and pure viewer enjoyment. Liggett calling a pack sprint is a delight. ...and speaking of pack sprints - The first significant sprint of the tour goes to our local boy Tyler Farrar who snuck up on Cavendish, Bonen and Pataki while they were watching each other! GO YANKS!

It looked like he tried to and might have been in to big a gear. He definitely got caught by surprise.

Who did Phil Liggett just say is the first “colored” cyclist in the Tour de France? Anyone get his name, team or number?

As a Brit Phil can use colored.

Just imagine what would happen with a US broadcaster

No more coverage...............

Wow that was a nasty crash. I re-wound the DVR and it was a cameraman standing on the road that caused the crash. Looks like Contador was caught out. Evans, Schleck and the other GC favorites are in the small front group... Maybe 30 riders.

Today was a great route and a good idea on the part of the tour. I’m really bummed to see so many of the front runners removed from the sprint opportunity by crashes. I hope everyone is well and ready for the TTT tomorrow.

Hey Freddy! How are you! Thanks for posting the live thread this year! It’s a lot of work but all us slackers surely appreciate it! As I’m on MDT I’m watching via DVR again. (I have to admit that I really enjoy speeding through all those ads! )
Amazing finish today. I think if the entire Peloton had finished together we might have had some carnage at the end (beyond the obvious from the crashes we had further back). As it is, I am thrilled to see AC 1.20 back. Karma is so tough...

JEAN-FRANÇOIS PESCHEUX’S ANALYSIS : Team power

“This team time trial is short and totally flat. We don’t want to end up with big time gaps but at the same time we do want some of the favourites to lose time. But on a course like this the gaps won’t, in theory, be too big. Each team’s time will be taken when their fifth rider crosses the line. This test is all about getting the balance right. Every team has riders who feel more at home in this kind of test and they will have to rein themselves in slightly because the objective is to finish as a group. Some of the Anglo-Saxon teams make a point of focusing on the team time trial as these tests underline the homogeneity and intrinsic value of the group as a whole.”

On to Stage 2...
