Sheriff Grady Judd said the end of free underwear will save an estimated $45,000 a year in operation costs.
Judd in a statement said, "$45,000 is one person's job we're saving. If inmates want to wear underwear in jail, they can buy it, just like hard-working Polk County citizens do."
This isn't the first time the sheriff has invoked creative cost cuts.
He eliminated peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cornbread, coffee, juice and fresh milk from the jail menu a few years ago, saying if inmates wanted to eat those things they should stop breaking the law.

Only question I have is why eliminate pbj sandwiches and cornbread? Those are cheap eats.
In Central America, if prisoners want to EAT, family has to provide the food.
Personally, I LIKE that idea, too.
Kudos to Sheriff Judd.
If I were in jail without coffee, I'd turn the place into Attica.
My dad used to work in a prison. Not the mamby pamby county or easy state type, but the maximum security nasty type complete with an execution function. He frequently talked about the need for low level markets in contraband to keep the inmates busy and engaged in those activities instead of killing each other and guards.
Florida has a Joe arpaio?
Labor intensive activities like vegetables can grow a lot of food in very little space. Do you have any idea of all the things you can do with zucchini?
I have a better idea than the Nice Officer’s - save teh $45,000 and fire the trough feeder.
Repeat, Repeat, Repeat - ‘til the budget balances.
Polk County doesn’t need most of its trough feeders, anyway.
Coffee: BAD idea. I'm with blackdog in #4 above.
Juice: Depends on the juice, but it's not expensive and promotes good health. What instead... soda pop? I'd rather have tax dollars giving the perps juice, than free dental/medical care which is a heck of a lot more expensive.
Fresh milk: What, only stale milk? I don't drink milk, but a lot of people put it on a par with coffee, see above.
The underwear is a fine idea. The food/drink, not so much.
We used to call them ‘swing-easys’ I guess this is just a new twist.....nothing to impair at all! I think Commando is appropriate, too.
True story...
Reporter: Sheriff Judd, why were there sixty shots fired at Mr. Washington?
Sheriff Judd: That's all the ammunition the deputies had.
5.56mm
Priceless! Criminals with their feet demonstrate that they do not wish to live in a law abiding society.......but, they should expect to receive the fruits that are a result of being part of a law abiding society?

Load ‘em up with soda, chips and as much fatty foods as possible. And take away the exercise machines. If I had to deal with them on a daily basis, I’d want them as sluggish as possible instead of buff and healthy. Lol!
In many States, it would be best to put lesser security prisoners to work on infrastructure projects. To start with, make contracts with the Indian reservations, many of which are in dire need of “shovel improvements”, that could then be finished by their own workmen, which would improve their lives enormously.
Then move on to large scale ecological improvement projects. For example, why not set inmates to work planting forests, digging flood diversion catchments (basically empty lakes to reduce river flooding when needed), and other projects too expensive for paid workmen that would take many years of labor to complete.
Less populous States could even import lots of prisoners in exchange for putting them in tent cities, clothing and feeding them.
Oddly enough, such labor would *not* be seen as a punishment by itself, but a *reward*. It would save a ton of money because it is a lot cheaper than keeping them in “brick prisons”, would alleviate overcrowding and end early release because of it.
The prisoners who were very dangerous, sick, or who were needed for court appearances or other reasons would stay in the far less crowded brick prisons back in the cities.
But it would be a serious deterrent to criminals anyway, as going to prison would be work and work, not slacking off.
If they are to buy their own underwear... then, I take it, they will be allowed to get a job and earn the money to buy it?
Otherwise, it sounds like a catch-22.
ROFL! I Love it!!!
Yes use them to work jobs that the illegal aliens does for less money that way we discourage aliens from coming and staying illegally.
The use instead a bagged kind of powdered milk and water, slightly sweetened. It is disgusting. For “juice” they use watered down Gator Aid. The majority of the diet is plain unseasoned rice and nearly plain noodles, sometimes spoiled, but if you are lucky there might be a piece of celery and a few bits of onion in it. If you are very lucky you might get a piece of tomato or peppers once a week. If you are stuck on the diet you will become ill because it isn’t anywhere near nutritionally balanced, and frequently old timers end up with kidney stones from it. Worse, all the carbs and no exercise make prisoners gain weight.
They make the food to be as unappealing as possible to “encourage” prisoners to beg their friends and family on the outside to put money on the prisoner’s account so the prisoner can use it to buy extra stuff, the price of which is high and controlled by the jail, in order to stay sane. Those prisoners without outside help are screwed or else are tempted to trade other things like gay sex if they are desperate for a change from the diet. This practice of driving down the quality and even safety of the food tempts prisoners to depend on these purchased treats [and in the case of female prisoners to become dependent on the Johns and pimps outside] BUT because it brings income to the jail and also a means of controlling prisoners using the threat of losing these commissary privileges to force obedience, there is an incentive to keep the youngest female prisoners in jail as these are the most profitable. Those prisoners who don’t get hooked tend to get released a bit quicker in order to make room for the teen girls even though the teens may not be the worst offenders. Bear in mind the county jail contains both convicted people and people who have not yet been convicted and should be considered innocent. It’s not right to improperly feed the presumed innocent even if you can justify punishment-by-diet for convicted criminals.
I certainly concur with you on that.
