Personally, I’ve always dreamed of the situation where I had a bottle of gas that was useless and a .44 mag in a field. But generally, my skinflint nature usually gets me to figure out what’s wrong. IMO, the valve is designed to NOT release gas until the nipple releases the safety valve in the bottle.

I have no idea why they messed up a perfectly good system.

For the same reason they mandated polarized electrical plugs, low-flush toilets, got rid of incandescent bulbs, removed phosphates from first your laundry detergent, and now your dishwasher soap:

They're not content with burning a bunch of your time every year with dealing with filing federal and state taxes. The more of your time they can suck up by getting in your way, the better.

And you better like it, or they'll pistol-whip & Tase you while shrieking "STOP RESISTING!" - just before they throw you in jail for a while, or bankrupt you, to remind the other peasants who's boss.

You know, kind of like that uppity bastard Bobby Unser:

Ah, I see you have requested help in this vanity concerning a stuck LNG tank.

Unfortunately, I have a direct line of natural gas running to my grill, so I
no longer have to deal with tanks.

Because of this, I am going to answer the question you should be asking:

What kind of handgun should I have as my grilling gun?

This is ultimately a matter of preference. Here are some suggestions:

If you are easily distracted while juggling meats, spice (Montreal Steak Seasoning
totally rocks meat by the way), and keeping an eye out for thieves, time will be
crucial to you. I suggest the simple and inexpensive Mossberg shotgun in 12 gauge.
You can take advantage of the spread in pattern to capitalize on a close up
surprise situation.

If you are not mechanically inclined (score in the prevent mode as an implementer
in the Kolbe test), then simplicity will be your friend. But I have to ask, if you
are in the prevent mode, why are you playing with fire??? Aside from that, I would
suggest a revolver.

If you are competent and experienced at grilling at high temperatures and very
familiar with your man tools, only then do I suggest a semi-automatic. Given the
high heat, I advise you to stay away from “plastic” guns like the Glock. Not a
good combo. Go with an all steel gun.

In any case, store your extra ammo - whether an extra clip or a box of shells -
FAR AWAY from the open flames.

I hope this helps with your dilemma.

best,
ampu

PS - the direct line of natural gas is fantastic. I had it put in when I redid my
back patio.

Yes. Reply 40 about the bleader valve on the side of the main valve.

I would have replied soon but didn’t read your solution until after dinner was fixed in the kitchen. Many thanks.

Take the tank to a wide open field, remove yourself from it by at least a quarter mile, aim at it with a 30-06, gently squeeze trigger and enjoy.

Put Tannerite on front of the tank and aim for it.

Take it to Knob Creek and shoot it with tracer bullets.

If it is LNG, check the vacuum pumps on your cryogenic cooling systems. The valves might be frozen as they only work at about -260F.

If it is LPG, just go buy a new jug for $20.

FWIW, the valving is sometimes reverse thread to what might be anticipated.

I have no idea why they messed up a perfectly good system.

It was done for 2 reasons.

#1 Safety

#2 Lawsuits

They changed to avoid people taking hammers and tapping on the side of an already malfunctioning valve under pressure.

Thanks for the update! I’m so glad it worked out—I was hoping it would! When you first posted, I thought, (1) this sounds like a difficult problem to diagnose online, and (2) if there’s an answer, it’s on FR. Can you even begin to imagine the clueless, useless replies a question like this would elicit on DU? Kos would be as bad. FReepers are so amazing.

Props to you, RL, for sleuthing it out. I learned something today!

Can’t argue the Safety end. If you can’t get anything out of the tanks, then you’re almost assured of not having a hazard (unless you roast them, drop them, or shoot them).

All three of which his ever lovin' FReeper friends suggested...
