Jim Reeves Estate Heads to October Trial
UPI ^ | July 24, 2011

Posted on 07/24/2011 7:26:00 PM PDT by nickcarraway

A Tennessee judge set a tentative October trial date for the long-running legal battle over the estate of the late country star Jim Reeves, who died in 1964.

At issue is a dispute over millions of dollars of past and future royalties from Reeves' body of work, which includes "Four Walls" and a bevy of other hits from the "Nashville sound" school of country music from the 1950s and 1960s.

The (Nashville) Tennessean said Sunday the Nashville Seventh Circuit Court ruled that the case would be decided based on the interpretation of a 1976 will written by Reeves' widow, Mary Reeves Davis. The ruling eliminated a later will that left everything to preacher Terry Davis.

Attorney Ames Davis, who represents Mary Reeves' estate, told the newspaper the case was unusual, but not uncommon.

"It's been never ending," Davis said. "It has involved half the attorneys in Nashville, but it's not uncommon when you have a dispute among heirs about significant sums of money."

The Tennessean said the battle basically boils down to a 1976 will designating family members as the beneficiaries of the estate. But in 1996, Mary Reeves sold the entire estate, including the royalty rights to Reeves' music, to carnival executive Ed Gregory.

Gregory went bankrupt in 2002, allegedly owing $6 million to Mrs. Reeves, who died in 1999. Her family contends she was not mentally competent when she agreed to the sale.

Jeeze,

Getting to be 50 years in court. After the lawyers, is there anything left.

Exactly. The lawyers are picking all the meat off the bones. Nothing to see here...

Interesting. I saw the late great Patsy Cline video Crazy and got curious about her fatal crash, which linked to the crash involving Jim Reeves. So many Opry losses in such a short time.

What really amazed me was the fandom JR had in Sri Lanka, of all places. That’s about the last place I would think having a C&W artist as a star.

That was an era that had some really nice songs. I can listen to most of them today.

I never knew the name of that song. “Railroad, steamboat, river and canal...” - that I remembered.

Chords looked awfully simple as JR strummed them. D and A7 were it. But what a great song!

I a m glad you finally called me on the phone.
I've been waiting here tonight, but not alone.
You broke the date that we had made just yesterday,
Now, there's someone else who's here. He'll have to stay.

There’s a guy who could sing. Checked out an Amy Winehouse vid on Youtube to see what the fuss was about. I could make out maybe 1/3 of the lyrics. And she was sober.

Wow, I didn’t realize there was an answer song. But then, in those days, there always was!

I read a very long story on this today in the Tennessean. What a strange, tangled mess this has been, and such an odd ending to someone whose music was so quiet and dignified. This had all kinds of intrigue - every possible estate wrangle you can think of, plus hundreds of dead cats in the freezer. Makes you shudder just to think of it.

"The late"??
How long is it before a dead person is no longer "the late"? It seems to me 47 years dead would disqualify somebody from being "the late". But then, what do I know?

Seriously, what is the meaning of “the late”? Isn’t Shakespeare “the late” Wiliam?

The correct answer is, when their estate is settled.
