Avoiding the rush (Globe advice column)
Boston Globe ^ | 7/24/11 | Robin Abrahams

Posted on 07/25/2011 11:57:11 AM PDT by raccoonradio

(K.D. of Cambridge writes): "I work in a two-person office with my boss. He listens to Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talk shows while we are in the office and when we are driving in the car to a job site. I am finding it harder and harder to listen to those shows, which I find increasingly offensive. In the car, I generally can tune it out by bringing something to read. Would it be rude to bring a personal music player to the office and listen to it with headphones while I’m working, explaining that I find listening to talk radio while I work distracting?"

Robin responds: "Of course it wouldn’t be rude! Stop being a stereotypical guilty liberal. You’re not even asking your boss to turn the radio off, you are merely saying that you would prefer not to listen to it. And talk radio is distracting, whether you’re listening to Rush Limbaugh or Terry Gross. If you’re working in an office, I assume you’re working with information, and it’s hard to listen to one train of thought and read another (let alone talk to clients over the phone). Presumably your boss values a productive worker more than an ideological convert, so pop on those headphones."

Was thinking of how Howie Carr mentioned the other day that he and his producer Sandy were in a cab in Washington D.C. and had to be subjected to what the cab driver had on (presumably he/she figures the cab riders would enjoy it):

Howie list ping.

How about waiting in an airport and being subjected to CNN?

I have been a long time fan of Rush. However as I get older and more grumpy I find myself getting irate listening to him now. Not because I disagree with him, it is because I strongly agree and having it said to me makes me even more angry about the crap going on in Washington. So I have to turn the radio off sometimes to keep from blowing a gasket. Just a suggestion as to how you could save face with your boss. Of course then you might have to discuss the crap with him or her and you could be caught being a liberal.

Of course that isn’t my boss, it’s the boss of “KD of Cambridge” whoever that is :) I listen to Howie Carr who at least has a good sense of humor about what’s going on (have to laugh to keep from screaming I guess; a good way to “vent”)

I am finding it harder and harder to listen to those shows, which I find increasingly offensive.

In other words, he's discovered to his horror that Rush makes sense, which offends his liberal indoctrination.

Just file suit against the boss for creating a hostile work environment. It's the liberal progressive way.

I work at a post office with loud machinery and listen to audiobooks:

Rush Limbaugh: An Army Of One
Atlas Shrugged
America Alone
The Fountainhead
The Brothers Bulger
Hitman
etc

Why not try listening to him with an open mind? You might find out he’s saying important stuff.

BTW, the Verizon guy who installed FIOS in my house last year parked his van on my street and had Rush blasting for the whole neighborhood to hear (well, not quite that bad, but it was clearly audible).

When I complimented him on his taste in political commentary he said “I never miss a show!”

“as I get older and more grumpy....”

Me too, except my problem is all those repetitious, numbing commercials. I can take Rush (or for that matter, ANY talk radio) for a maximum of 7 minutes, then the barrage begins. I have to switch over to Sirius for some soothing music.

As someone who has to keep his mouth shut or be fired in every meeting I’m in while the rest of the 100% liberal group spout off about their pet peeve of the moment, I got no sympathy for this whiner.

My boyfriend and I recently went on a double date. We arrived before the other couple and were seated right away for our 7:30 reservation. We ordered a bottle of wine; the waitress brought over four glasses but only poured two. We got to talking and couldn’t figure out what the proper etiquette is: Do we wait to sit until everyone in the party has arrived? Do we order wine (or anything) while we are waiting? Do we drink the wine we ordered? Should we have waited at the bar? This has come up a few times, and we want to make sure we aren’t offending anyone.
This was the next question down, the one below the Rush question.

All I can say is wow, those Boston liberals sure are a pack'o'wimps, aren't they?

Hey, turd-brain. Drink the d*mn wine and quit agonizing about it.

It reminds me of the show "Super Why" (which my 2-year-old watches), in which everything is a "Super Big Problem". In defense of my 2-year-old: he's 2 years old.

“And talk radio is distracting, whether you’re listening to Rush Limbaugh or Terry Gross”

That’s my take on it. Regardless of if I agree or disagree.

I suppose the level of distraction depends on your personality and the nature of the work. If I worked in an office where NPR (Nina Totenberg) was constantly blaring I would be driven to distraction by the temptation, no need, to yell out.

The truth hurts.

Obviously it hurt lieberals more than others.

Yeh I know that is not the correct spelling.

My situation exactly. Those freaking lying victim-card-playing BS liberal whiners are the REAL authoritarians in our society. They are so oppressive with their Outrage & Opinions that the ONLY civilized thing to do is just avoid all conversation on all such subjects. Which is a classic case of censorship in action.

One of the guys I work with is on the fence (but is sadly too dumb to know it) and occasionally and INADVERTENTLY makes some sense. The unofficial office custodian of the Official Obama Version of Reality calmly but sternly always "explains" to the poor guy how he's wrong -- how he's been "listening to Republican sources".

It's like watching a young goat getting his testicles sliced off. Truly sickening.

But if I intervened, I would be stirring up such a cauldron of sh*t that it would severely impact my effectiveness in that company, and it would change no (zero, none) minds so I keep my mouth shut.
