It has been quite a while since I read any of the four major books (among Tolkien's other books) that dealt with this saga. It has been quite a while since I have read any of Tolkien's books for that matter.
But... I do remember Mordor being a geographical location in Middle Earth, not a being or person that Hobbits "defeated," as McCain put it. I knew this the moment that I heard McCain utter his strange attack on the Tea Party. Hobbits never defeated Mordor...
I know that it doesn't matter much, geography of this and all, but if you are going to invoke "Hobbits" and "Mordor" (why McCain said all that is just plain weird) then he should have some things straight, right?
In the stories the forces of Suron were sometimes refered to geographically as the forces ‘of Mordor’. Just as we might say that in WW2 we defeated ‘Germany’ instead of just Hitler or Nazism.
Now we know where Meghan gets her smarts from.
McCain has dementia. Mordor is located in the middle east. Isengard is in Washington DC
DC is about the guns and butter and old guns John is trying to cross the isle and join with the butters and bring the old guns and butter band back together like the old days.
You can defeat “forces,” not a geographical location.
McCain didn’t put it like you put it.
He thought that he was going to be cute and clever but he botched it, because he didn’t know what he was talking about. And it appeared that he was just slightly quivering when he gave his strange speech, too.
Once again he tries to bail out Obama and the establishment Democrats, just like he bailed them out on Libya. Just like he has bailed out Establishment Repubs and Dems on... and... and...
The list is long. This is enough.
A hobbit destroyed Mordor’s source of power and it collapsed.
We hobbits need to destroy Washington’s source of power - our money.
Well, maybe not destroy it but..Hey the metaphor’s not perfect.
How about the al-Qaeda Muslim Brotherhood Hobbits McCain and Graham want to arm in Libya? Is that OK?
This whole analogy is rich and worth our time to consider.
Was the author implying that Washington is like Mordor? Or only that the Teaparty wrongly think Washington is like Mordor?
Was the author implying that the average american taxpayer is like a hobbit (traditional, loyal, simple, happy, honest, agrarian, brave, charitable...) or only that we fancy ourselves as such?
Interesting...
McCain... weren’t the hobbits the good guys who saved the world?
a
I’m sure he neither read the books nor saw any of the movies. Somebody told him it would be cool to say. It wasn’t. Useful idiot.
Beat me to it.
Hey McStain! Two scruffy Hobbits threw the ring of power into the crack of doom and thereby defeated one of the biggest, baddest and ugliest tyrants of middle earth.
Now sit down and shut up you senile old freak!
“Two scruffy Hobbits threw the ring of power into the crack of doom and thereby defeated one of the biggest, baddest and ugliest tyrants of middle earth.”
Actually, an ex-hobbit fell into the cracks of doom. He wasn’t pushed, he fell. Therefore, it was because of a hobbit (albeit a hobbit twisted and corruption beyond recognition as such) that the Ring was destroyed.
