5 Health Benefits of Smoking
Live Science ^ | July 19, 2011 | Christopher Wanjek

Who says smoking cigarettes is so bad ... well, aside from the World Health Organization, Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and every medical board and association on the face of the Earth?

But should smokers be fortunate enough to dodge all that cancer, heart disease, emphysema and the like, they will be uniquely protected — for reasons unexplained by science — against a handful of diseases and afflictions.

Call it a silver lining in their otherwise blackened lungs. Although long-term smoking is largely a ticket to early death, here are (gulp) five possible benefits from smoking. Breathe deep.

1. Smoking lowers risk of knee-replacement surgery

While smokers might go broke buying a pack of cigarettes, they can at least save money by avoiding knee-replacement surgery. Surprising results from a new study have revealed that men who smoke had less risk of undergoing total joint replacement surgery than those who never smoked.

The study, from the University of Adelaide in Australia, appears in the July issue of the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. What could be the connection? Knee-replacement surgery was more common among joggers and the obese; smokers rarely jog, and they are less likely to be morbidly obese.

After controlling for age, weight and exercise, the researchers were at a loss to explain the apparent, albeit slight protective effects of smoking for osteoporosis. It could be that the nicotine in tobacco helps prevent cartilage and joint deterioration.

Had a pulmonologist tell me that if you smoke, keep it under 15 per day and smoke no further down the filtered cigarette than a thumbs width from the filter. If possible stop at two finger widths from the filter (smoke only filtered cigarettes) ... the second half of the cigarette accumulates the tar and such drawn from burning the first half of the cigarette, so smoking the second half has much more tar and chemicals than the first half. [We were having a smoke on the outside patio at a cocktail party, or rather he was bumming a smoke from me on the patio.]

That would certainly be the preferable of the two choices. To a conservative.

Of course. However we all know there are conservatives, and then there are.............conservatives.........

You bet its good for the economy.

Wanna boost the local economy? Strike down ‘no smoking’ laws.

Watch the bar business go back to where it was. Cigar bars too.

The State is screwing with our businesses, our families, our diets, our religious beliefs and morality, and last but not least, the things we do to let off steam.

Smoking is banned NOT because its bad for you, but because female regulators think it makes their hair and clothes smell bad when they come home from a restaurant. Full stop.

Right. And the MSM scrambled to protect one of their own.

If you smoke, you deserve to die of cancer, hopefully a horrible death. But if you don't....hell, the reprobates are confounded.

Did you ever see the movie Black Robe? It’s about a 1700s French minister who is trying to convert the Indians in Canada to Christianity. The Indian men are all sitting around a campfire smoking and one asks the cleric: “Will there be tobacco in Heaven?” The priest answers “No.” Then the Indians harumph to themselves that there would be no point to going to Heaven if they couldn’t smoke!

No need to convince me, I’ve been reading all the info probably since before Al Gore invented the internet........

All kidding aside, I was dealing with this crap nearly a decade before I got online and was both thrilled and amazed to learn just how NOT alone I really was when I finally did get online.

Smoking can’t be all that bad. Just think of what it does for women’s sex lives-and that of the men who benefit.

As a stress reliever, smoking does save lives. Several times over the years, going out for a smoke kept me from choking the living crap out of some butt hole who richly deserved it.

I’m thinking of 2 of them -— but I know exactly what you mean.

How have you been? I wasn’t around for a long time, I needed to recharge the batteries.

"As a stress reliever, smoking does save lives." Of course there's no way of ever knowing for sure, but I wonder how many potentially fatal auto accidents have been averted because somebody used nicotine to stay awake and remain focused.

I read somewhere that smokers tend to have more beta brain waves than alpha, beta being associated with reasoning skills, etc. Alpha was being put forth, of course, as a good thing, but to me when I was tested, I felt unfocussed and sort of dreamy. Beta felt clear and alert.
