Shawn Hunter, co-chairman of the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado, has confirmed that Tour de France champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) will be participating in the race. The Pro Challenge, which will be held from August 22-28, will feature eight ProTour teams in all. The addition of Evans to the BMC Racing Team roster bolsters the already considerable buzz surrounding the race...

Along with Evans, Frank and Andy Schleck are slated to start for Leopard-Trek. “These guys together have become household names in terms of the sporting environment, in particular cycling,”...

Though the overall victory will likely go to a handy climber and all-rounder, the Pro Cycling Challenge should offer opportunities for all types of riders. Before a flat finish on stage 6, there’s a short prologue time trial and a 10-mile individual TT on stage 3. Stage 2 takes riders to Aspen, on a 131-mile ride that could prove epic. Climbs of Independence Pass and Cottonwood Pass both peak at nearly 4,000 meters in elevation.

I know the guys that compete at the top levels in the Hawaii Ironman triathlon take a few weeks to recuperate.

Got to wonder how long after winning the top spots on the TDF those guys are really ready to ride again. What was it, 2,000+ miles, much of it at max effort, or close to it?

The sort of conditioning that has them ready to go at the mountains again is mind boggling.....

A couple of years ago Lance Armstrong, after competing in the TDF, road the Leadville 100 - a 100 mile mountain bike race. He beat the 6 time winner by almost 30 minutes and road the last 20 miles on a flat tire. A friend of mine road that race and quoted Armstrong as saying that the 2100+ mile Tour De France was a “warm-up ride” for the Leadville 100. These guy’s are machines.

I was wondering about the flat tire thing, then I re-read and saw mountain bikes. Much lower pressure tires than road, right?

Still, that had to be a major boat anchor to drag along....

A real drag to say the least! I run my road bike @ 130psi and my mountain @ 80psi. I can’t imagine rolling 20 miles on a flat.
