We had a toy poodle when my daughter was born. She would beg to be put in the playpen when the baby was in there. They would cuddle and go to sleep. The poodle lived to be 19.
A lengthy transcript of a PBS show (”Decoding The Dog”) that’s just full of fascinating and fun facts for those of us who are owned by dogs. Worth the read when you have a little bit of time.
All herding dogs do that without a command. It’s just natural. The child does not always appreciated it, however.
When I lived in TX, my next door neighbor had a couple of teacup poodles — those little white, fluffy dogs that look like they’d break. Their college aged daughter brought home a Sheltie puppy that looked like a miniature Lassie. I’d look out my upstairs window and watch that Sheltie herding those poodles and their cat too. I’d just crack up.
Now, we had a strict leash law in that town, and I was not too happy when the Sheltie herded the whole shebang over to my yard and the dog catcher tried to give me a ticket!
I liked that post so much that I emailed it to my wife at her office.
Her response:
We don’t own a car with a trunk-that is good for me.
We do own a backhoe that I know how to drive and 5 acres-that is not good for you.
Give Falco a bath.
Two 14 year old BC’s bro & sister, mom & dad from Wales, one two year BC from Miss, they herd any and everything. Old male works counter clockwise, female herds clockwise. Have to put them up after about 30 minutes when grand kids are in the pool, or they will run until pads on feet are bleeding. Female was for grand kids in New Orleans, no running room, so
I brought her back to Alabama with me,when she was 3 years old. We took her back down to stay with grand daughter for a couple of weeks. As we started to leave, she jumped thru open window into my wife’s lap to avoid getting left.
My X sister in law used the playpen for her christmas tree. Kept the kids from playing with it..
Life without our dogs just wouldn’t be the same. They enrich our lives so much.
I had a Border Collie/ Newfie mix who lived to age 16.. I have a 11 month old BC/Sheltie mix now.. Borders are the BEST.. Prayers and Hugs for your sweet dog.
bump for later
Adorable!! Your child had his/her very own living doggie to play with... I know many dogs are very protective and like to be near their “puppy”. I say “their” since our Cairn would leave my youngest child’s side and I would joke that she was “his puppy”. LOL!
“... the dog catcher tried to give me a ticket”.
He was probably thinking, “just how many critters do you have?” LOL. I did know one friend that had a Sheltie who would try to “herd” snapping turtles. He would drag the dog back to the house for fear that the turtle would give him a good old snap on his snout.
“... used the playpen for her Christmas tree.”
Not a bad idea... especially since little ones have to “touch” something so pretty, shiny and new. Always better to prevent an accident! Sometimes all it takes is a turn of the head or putting on a new paper towel onto the holder and you hear the... CRASH! Somehow kids can get anywhere in the house in a very short period of time.
I don’t think I’d recommend a Sheltie for small children, however, unless you know the dog really well. Some of them can be snappish, even though they are cute as the dickens.
Joe 6 Pack has the Doggie ping list.
Ha! Your wife has a good sense of humor!
LOL... After 40 years together, we both do. LOL
