Japan offers US some concessions

Wednesday, August 6, 1941 www.onwar.com

In Tokyo... Konoye’s government presents proposals involving some concessions in China and Indochina to the US, asking in return for the end of the freeze on Japanese assets. The proposals are not acceptable to the US and when the rejection is made known to the Japanese they propose that Konoye and Roosevelt meet to the discuss the issues at stake.

As the P-40’s and the trainers droned on to Iceland, Wasp heads home for Norfolk, her three escorts in company. Also at Reykjavik, Iceland, are detachments of USN Patrol Squadrons 73 (VP-73), with PBY-5A Catalinas, and VP-74, with PBM-1 Mariners; both squadrons, which are serviced by the seaplane tender, destroyer USS Goldsborough (AVD-5), begin routine air patrols over the North Atlantic on this date. Anyone know what the new weapon was that was created by Andrei Kostichoff? A Google search turned up nothing.

It's interesting reading all the news about Japan and the US pre-Dec 7,41 articles in the paper. It strengthens what I've read that Roosevelt saw an attack coming and may have used it to involve the US in WWII, it would seem most Americans at the time would have seen it coming also.

They certainly didn’t keep the meeting between Churchill and FDR secret for very long. Of course at this point it’s just speculation by the press.

I noticed the story of the Greek guardsman at the Acropolis. Looks like the Greek Council in New York, Nicholas G. Lely, was who told the story in America at least. I really wish we knew whether or not it was true.

Total casualties on the Eastern Front since the start of BARBAROSSA now number 266,352 with Army Group Centre having 88,400 of those casualties.

After six weeks. You were right about that, PzLdr. The eastern front is like no other.

Even assuming that 40% of these casualties are deaths it means in 6 weeks, over 100,000 German soldiers have been killed. That’s around one quarter of the total number of American military dead for the entire war. And right now, the Soviets soldiers are suffering even greater losses. The Eastern Front truly is a bloodbath.

Headline: "Nazi Ouster Urged Upon Afghanistan (by Ray Brock) – 8"

"The British minister to Afghanistan... has made representations to the Afghan Government similar to the proposals already placed by the British before the Iranian Government suggesting the expulsion of unnecessary German travelers and residents from that country...

"...The number of Germans in Afghanistan, according to British sources is much smaller than the number of Germans in Iran -- estimated between 3,000 and 5,000.
Nevertheless there has been a marked increase in the travel of German 'tourists' and technicians to Afghanistan during recent weeks and the British are said to have made no secret of their anxiety about them..."

Most interesting that Western Allies in 1941 are so concerned about both Iran and Afghanistan...

Meanwhile, in 2011, according to Wikipedia:

"With a contingent of 5,350 soldiers and policemen, Germany is one of the main contributors of troops to coalition operations in Afghanistan.
Although German troops mainly operate in the comparatively quiet north of the country, the Bundeswehr has suffered a number of casualties during participation in the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan."

"...As of June 10 2011, 52 German soldiers and three policemen have died in Afghanistan, making a total of 55 deaths.
Among them are the first German reservists to fall in hostile actions and the first German policemen to die in a deployment abroad.
In addition to these fatalities, 240 German soldiers and four police officers suffered injuries of varying degree caused by hostile activity."

So, today Germans are back in Afghanistan, but under markedly different circumstances. ;-)

August 6:

"In Belgium, a collaborationist military unit, Legion Vlaandern (Flanders Legion), is established."
------------------------------------

"Dozens of German soldiers observe Jews murdered as a result of the Ternopol, Ukraine, massacres in July 1941.
Several of the German soldiers cover their noses with handkerchiefs because of the odor of the decaying corpses.
German military commanders exploited local antisemitism wherever their troops went, egging on hateful locals and encouraging German soldiers to participate in the violence.
The Ternopol pogrom began on July 4, just two days after German troops took the city."

"About a third of the population of Minsk, Belorussia, was Jewish by the time the Germans arrived in June 1941.
The city's Jews were confined to a ghetto beginning in July, and executions and deportations took place with metronomic regularity.

"In this photo, Adolf Wedekind, a member of a German police regiment, poses in front of a Nazi display replete with a portrait of Hitler.
Wedekind's regiment was involved in the executions of Soviet partisans in the areas surrounding Minsk.
As the German Army extended its hold over Europe, the question of manpower became critical.
Police regiments like Wedekind's were instrumental in carrying out the racial reordering of Eastern Europe."

Ternopol may have indeed been instigated by the Germans, but it was carried out by the Ukrainian Nationalists, who had been starved to death by the millions, and beaten by the commissars that the local jews supported wholeheartedly.

That’s one of the cruel facts that gets lost in the political correctness. Many of the the Jews of Eastern Europe saw Communism as their salvation from the pogroms of the past, and wholeheartedly embraced it.

This was a land already soaked in blood long before the Nazi’s arrived.

No doubt. I've said here before that, when it came to mass murder and genocide, the older Stalin was, in a sense, young Hitler's mentor, and in the end was probably responsible for even more deaths than Hitler.

Of course, Stalin was more concerned with class than race, and normally tried harder than Hitler to extract the last bit of useful work out of his victims, before they died.
Thus you might even argue that Hitler's murders were often quicker and more "humane" than Stalin's.

But the linkage of Jew = Communist was, and is, a permanent feature of Nazi propaganda, and while it's certainly true that many Eastern European Jews were Communists, Nazi murder rampages made little effort to distinguish between Communist or actively partisan Jews on the one hand, and totally innocent Jewish old & young, men, women & children.

In the end, to Nazis they were all just Jews, and all were murdered.
