Mystery Plant
Vanity | 08/21/2011 | Self

Posted on 08/21/2011 11:24:57 AM PDT by Twotone

My aunt has an unusual plant that came up in her garden & needs some help identifying it. It looks like a variety of squash, & I've done a search for images. But nothing I found matches it identically. I thought I'd ask for some FReeper assistance...

I think Donald Sutherland has a bit of experience with plants that bloom.

Got hit with squash bugs this year, bad. First time ever. Already took out my yellow squash and it looks like i’m going to have to pick my acorn squash early.

I was looking at very similar pictures, but they didn’t quite look like this flower - pointier leaf ends & the inner stamen (?) had a different shape.

I think she’ll let it keep going to see what comes of it. It will be interesting...

If it doesn’t send out any runners, it’s almost certainly a zucchini. The shape of the leaves is right.

If it does send them out, it’s probably a spaghetti squash.

I’m guessing zucchini, though.

Those are evil little monsters. I control them by placing cedar planks
about 2-feet away from the rows where they cuddle under during the daytime.
Then every couple days flip them and spray them down. Regular organic spray
does not kill them. You could also shopvac them up to keep the garden soil organic.
