NEW YORK, - The New York City Health Department has been cracking down on animals in bars, much to the dismay of pet and bar owners.
Between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011, the health department issued 469 citations for having live animals in bars and restaurants, The New York Times reported.
The crackdown means Miles, a 9-year-old boxer-pug mix can no longer go into the Ace Bar.
"He's a dog, but I swear he looks sad," Mike Israely, 33, the dog's owner. "Coming here was part of our evening walk."
City health codes have always found dogs near beer taps a violation, but many bars have disregarded the rule; NYC has a long history of dog-friendly establishments. In the 19th century, saloons often employed dogs as security.
Many residents deem quality of an establishment by whether or not they allow dogs. Allowing dogs is a sign of a "a proper neighborhood bar," Christine Sismondo, the author of "America Walks Into a Bar."
"It proves you're not one of those corporate B.Y.O.F. bars: bring your own friends."
My husband was in Scotland on business and met an old friend and his wife there. They drove down to meet my husband at his hotel (a renowned one) and left their Golden Retriever in the car while they dined. The owner asked the waitress for some water for the dog. When she heard that he was waiting in the car,he insisted that they bring the dog in, and she served him water in a silver bowl and dog treats on a silver platter.
It is a common sight there, according to our friends. There were dogs all over the dining room, resting calmly at their owners’ feet.
I agree
But much to the relief of people who don’t go to bars to get dog slobber on their clothes.

Funny, I thought you’d have come down squarely on the side of making it the bar owner’s decision. Then the patron can make an informed choice. Kind of like smoking.
I love your story. Btw, my family has had 7 Great Danes. They are wonderful dogs.
When my nephew was around 2 or 3 years old; we were on the driveway of my parents home. It sloped upwards. My nephew started walking up the driveway to the street. One of the danes saw him; followed him and grabbed hold of his shirt and moved him back down the driveway. They are people oriented and protect.
My Ash is very fond of champagne.
As well they should, properly trained and all.
I just thought it was strange as this is probably the last reason I could think of for not wanting a dog in a bar. I don’t think it is very likely to happen unless you initiate the contact then it isn’t the dog’s fault it is yours.
Kinda like not shopping at Walmart because Walmart is more likely to be hit by a meteorite than K-Mart.
One of my cats will lick wing sauce off wings. It’s not the hottest stuff I’ve ever tasted, but it does have a reasonable kick.
I think he’d steal an entire wing if I’d let him, but chicken bones are one of the very few things I’m 100% strict on, much to his dismay.
don’t go to that bar then! Ninety-nine % of bars do not allow dogs....go to one of those!
“Ok. Im betting ADA requires the bars to allow assist dogs. But if having dogs around food is a health risk, why should people be put at risk just so others can bring in their assist dogs.
And if, as I suspect, there isnt really a health risk, why cant everybody bring dogs in if the owner allows it?”
How dare you question the Wisdom of the State!
:-)
Places that serve food and drink need to follow certain minimal sanitation guidelines. I don't think it should be up to the owner if he should allow rats and mice in the kitchen or not. I don't think it should be up to the owner to decide that cockroaches are acceptable. I don't think it should be up to the owner to decide that some stuff shouldn't be refrigerated There have to be objective standards.
Dogs are animals. They aren't a special class of animals that are really just furry humans in disguise - they're animals like cats, chickens, hogs, etc. Considering the disgusting things that I've seen dog owners do (as in kissing their animal), and the digusting things dogs do (love those dead animals to roll in.) When I had a dog, the first think he'd do after being forcibly washed was go find some sh!t to roll in. It's just the way dogs are. I don't think it unreasonable to ban animals from establishments that serve food, and whether or not dog owner care to admit it, dogs are animals.
Follow up, here, I pulled the gristle off the end of the chicken hot wings and gave it to my mastiff, he immediately got hooked on it, got in my face and licked my jeans where I wiped my fingers. Fairly warm sauce, actually. Great with beer.Diddn’t give any beer to the dog, he gets foolish when he drinks, though he loves the stuff.
LOL that’s awesome! I had an uncle who used to sneak sips of beer to his beagle, years ago.
