My First Time At Five Guys Burgers
Me | Today | Me

Posted on 08/31/2011 5:57:50 PM PDT by mountn man

SO, after much anticipation, I finally had the chance to try Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

And after hearing and reading all the hype, I was definetly...What would be the correct word?...

UNIMPRESSED!!!

Oh! You’re correct. It is known as DLI.

In my defense, I was a French linguist for the Navy: we always called the school, L’Institute de Langue Militaire. This translates as “The Military Language Institute”. Close to Defense Language Institute, but not exact.

Thirty years tends to affect a person’s memory. And I was always told, this isn’t the ‘real’ Navy, you know!

Agreed, Wendy’s is better and cheaper. I went to a 5 Guys and was not impressed. Yeah ya walk in, a bunch of bags of ‘taters...an OK burger. OK fries. Overpriced.

There can be nothing exceptional about a non-Chicago hot dog.

How can you tell if a Chicago hot dog is exceptional? When it is buried under three kinds of relish, celery salt, mustard, a long sliced pickle, salt, pepper, onions, and optionally anything that isn't ketchup, the poor frankfurter can barely be noticed.

If the frank had a chance, steaming or boiling it doesn't help. Take a long butcher quality frank (you can do better than Vienna beef), cut it long ways, and GRILL it. Few cuts of meat aren't improved by grilling.

Next, toast a New England style bun (sometimes referred to as a clam roll), slather with butter. Few things aren't improved with butter, and toast.

Grilled onions alone can make this exquisite, or add a modest amount of condiments to taste (mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper, no more than one kind of relish, but please, no celery salt).

My grandkids and hubby love Red Robin. Always have to go there when visiting them in CO. Endless fries is the ticket and their burgers are excellent. Actually haven’t had a bad sandwich there yet.

Georges in Waco.

Excellent choice, especially with a Big O.

I once had a French exchange student living next to me so I took him to Tommy’s in Huntington Beach for the double chili cheese burger and chili fries.

He took mayonaisse and drenched the chili fries with it. Everyone there, even the “foreign help” looked at him like he was insane.

I’m originally from BC, canada and that’s how most people do it with the fries, which started with the French Quebecers. Just one of the annoying canadian habits I bought stateside. At this point, ketchup doesn’t do it for me anymore LOL.

Come to think of it, I bought my cousin who is from Newfoundland to Hollywood and we ate at In N Out and he loved it. He then kept reminding me that i am the only person in the world who starts and finished the fries before the burger.

Reading through the replies, I’m guessing you didn’t think that so many would take you seriously.

Gotta agree. 5G wasn’t worth the extra money. It tasted about the same as a Wendy’s burger and fries. Not much different or better.

It's true. I replied to a Pulp Fiction quote with a Pulp Fiction quote. I find the movie extremely quotable, and I know people who have not ever seen it, but who quote it just the same.

But, yeah, my casual reply didn't go over as well as I had hoped.

It's like I'm a clown for their amusement.
