Many Sections of the Country. But mostly the northeast. And no New Mexico, North Texas, or Fresno State.
Note, that from the NY Times perspective; Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, are considered “West.”
Early prediction: Bruce Smith for the Heisman. :)

That was the Michigan perspective as well. Note the line in their fight song, “Hail, Hail to Michigan the Champions of the West”
Hey! Shouldn’t this be in Breaking News? s/
Nah. It's Sunday in 1941. The next games aren't for another week.
The USC Trojans are in for a tough season. Our new coach, Sam Barry, and his young and undermanned team will be tested early on when they square off against powerful Oregon State in the home opener.
On the plus side, we will have six home games and only three away games, but one of those away games will be at Notre Dame, whose new coach, Frank Leahy, did such a spectacular job coaching the Boston College Eagles.
Sam Barry, our new head coach, stepped in following the death of the legendary Howard Jones a month and a half ago. He serves as head coach of our baseball and basketball teams as well.
Fight on!
But there are a couple of smaller schools that might not be playing big-league football much longer. Santa Clara, a Catholic college that grew out of the Santa Clara Mission established by the Spaniards, still plays most of the major colleges on the West Coast, although the Broncos have never beaten the USC Trojans and I predict they never will.
Saint Mary's, a Catholic institution nestled high in the Berkeley Hills, may be a small school, but they've fielded some scrappy teams. Ten years ago, the Gaels upset the USC Trojans in our home opener, though we went on to win the rest of our games, the '32 Rose Bowl, and the National Championship.
