OKLAHOMA CITY — The nation's second-largest Indian tribe said on Tuesday that it would not be dictated to by the U.S. government over its move to banish 2,800 African Americans from its citizenship rolls.
"The Cherokee Nation will not be governed by the BIA," Joe Crittenden, the tribe's acting principal chief, said in a statement responding to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Crittenden, who leads the tribe until a new principal chief is elected, went on to complain about unnamed congressmen meddling in the tribe's self-governance.
The reaction follows a letter the tribe received on Monday from BIA Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk, who warned that the results of the September 24 Cherokee election for principal chief will not be recognized by the U.S. government if the ousted members, known to some as "Cherokee Freedmen," are not allowed to vote.

What’s funny is that on the Federal census many people had rather be known as a black than Indian.
A lot of people don’t understand this, because the MSM muddies it just like they do so many other stories.
From what I understand, if you are descended from a Cherokee bloodline, black, white, or inbetween, you are a Cherokee. If you are a line that was an escaped slave that was harbored or owned by a Cherokee, you are not a member.
You have to have a certain percentage of blood to be a Cherokee. That’s all this is about. You can’t just say, hey I lived with you, therefore I am a voting member of the tribe.
I hope I am reading this correctly but that is what I am getting. The MSM is trying to make it seem that if you are Cherokee and also black, you are getting thrown out.

After more than a century and a half of association with the tribe, wouldn't there have been some intermarriage between the blacks and the Cherokee to put the current "black Cherokees" over the 1/8 threshold or was strict marriage segregation the custom?

Funny....I was just looking through some files I’d scattered about my basement workshop...one page was an old typed funeral eulogy for my great-great grandfather, William Lafayette Weems, died 1922 and born in Cherokee County here in Georgia in 1860.....his parents were the immigrants here in Georgia, I think (not sure - there a lot of ‘Weems’ that go back quite a ways)....I digress....my Cherokee roots are from my father’s side of the family from Clinton SC where his daddy was a sharecropper.....my grandmother (his wife) was 1/4 Cherokee...
The Black Caucus is all over this. I always like when two Dem constituencies are at loggerheads. Another headache for Chief Barack.

To become a member of the tribe one need only prove an ancestor was on one of the early rolls, i.e. The Dawes Rolls, used to give members their allotments. Blood quantum is not a factor. I am 1/64 and just recently joined. This is not unusual for people, like myself, who research their family history. A large number of the tribe do not get, nor want, the freebies. Any black whose ancestor intermarried & was on the rolls will remain in the tribe or can enroll if not already a member.

So what? Either has merit. We did conquer this land and we are giving the conquered their "due". Just because we have been taught to think through the veil of political correctness, does not make them wrong.
Many blacks claim slavery, a common practice of the day, as their sole reason to collect welfare checks - and white guilt has kept the money flowing. They claim victim status because "we took them from their land and brought them here" I say, the Red Indian just lacks "White Guilt"
