Broccoli is good for you but there's a trick to make it work even harder.
Adding mustard, horseradish or wasabi to your broccoli has been found to significantly boost its cancer-fighting ability in a new study published this week.
The secret sidekick is an enzyme called myrosinase which is necessary to form sulforaphane, the vegetable's cancer-preventive component.
When a food item containing the enzyme was eaten with broccoli, scientists at the University of Ilinois found that the combination revved up the production of sulforaphane in both foods.
The study was published online in the British Journal of Nutrition Tuesday.
To squeeze out maximum benefits, pair the broccoli with as much heat as you can, researchers said.
"The spicier, the better. That means it's being effective," said study co-author Elizabeth Jeffrey.

Deep fried broc with honey mustard sause
WAA-SSAAAAA-bi!
Crisp and cold with a spicy wasabi aioli - oh, yea!
Sign of the times in Chinese restaurant:
Caution!
This is Wasabi, not guacamole.
I eat a lot of broccoli just because it is healthy.
There are five vegetables that were derived from the will English cabbage. They are:
1. Broccoli
2. Cauliflower
3. Brussell Sprouts
4. Cabbage (The stuff we eat in cole slaw)
5. Collard Greens
All of these are high in cancer fighting properties.
(BTW, those five are the answer to a Trivial Pursuit question)
“...secret sidekick...”
Secret sidekick? I’d say anything with a seriously hot afterburner effect you add to food would be more healthy than sitting still and farting contentedly. Folks need a blatant butt-kick in the way of mustard, horseradish or hot pepper to get them up and moving about, like an airplane with an afterburner.
Should be wild
You can tell if it's good when you take a bite. And then take a deep breath and let it get in your nasal cavity. That's some GOOD HORSERADISH!
WhaaaAAAAt's UUUUuuuuup!!!
WAA-SSAAAAA-bi!
Heh heh ... good ad.
Maybe a few shots of Jack Daniels with your Broccoli....well, might not increase the cancer fighting, but will help with any pain you have :-)
I use horseradish in my coleslaw. Not much. Just enough to make it interesting.
We now have some Indian deli-supermarkets in my neighborhood that I’ve been hitting regularly for awhile now and I swear spice is addictive ( like in Dune). It’s not even the quest for a “hot” taste like in Mexican type food. Most hot food is pepper based but in Indian the heat is spice based. Bottom line, heavy spice influences my sense of well being. I’m not surprised to see science back this up.
“There’s nothing better than a good batch of homemade horseradish. “
especially if it is vacuum sealed.
