At What Point for you did The Simpsons Become Unwatchable?

Posted on 09/26/2011 8:12:50 AM PDT by no gnu taxes

I used to love this show. As a young adult in 1990, when I first heard about the show, I scoffed at it, figuring it was some lame effort at crude humor aimed at the lowest elements. But when I watched it, I saw it had a brilliant take on society, and every show had a positive message overall.

Sure they had political spoofs. But I thought they were fair and even handed.

Then around 2000, the show went downhill rapidly. The writing became crap, and the show slowly started turning MSNBC. The end of of my watching this show became around 2003 or 2004 when they had something like 3 straight episodes trashing the Iraq War with an obvious anti-Bush bias.

I guess if you were an Olbermann fan, you'd have liked it still, but now the show makes me want to vomit. I don't think I've seen an episode in 6 years, and from what I see on other forums, I'm probably right.

I tend to think other Freepers feel the same way.

How much of it did you watch? In the early days their best writer was a self described “libertarian gun enthusiast”. His episodes usually had references to this or that battle.

The number of minutes I wasted watching that program could be counted on one finger, with knuckles left over. That tell you what you want to know? Liberals and libertarians are not of interest to me.

As I said earlier, it had some of the most conservative writing on TV back then. Libertarian or otherwise. Unless you just don’t have taste for that sort of satire.

My taste for satire tends towards a higher level than The Simpsons, Family Guy, or King of the Hill.

Same could be said for SNL.

That’s considerably lower comedy than the The Simpsons. :) It’s hardly even satire...more like farce or parody.

To those who reflexively hated the Simpsons, you really don’t know what you missed. Originally, the satire was biting and hit all targets, left and right, equally. Remember the ‘Monorail’ episode? It demolished the lefty fantasy that a big enough infrastructure program will save us all. The show started to turn when the original writers jumped ship. What really did it for me was one of their Halloween specials had a bit entitled ‘Hell Toupe’ which was plagiarized from an episode of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Amazing Stories’ show (remember that steaming pile of a show?). I never watched again until just recently. I now have a 13 year old son who wants to watch it, so, I relented, and we watched the Halloween episode a couple years back. It ended with the ghost of Abraham Lincoln groping some guy’s ass. Sorry, never again.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. I like my actors living, especially with satire/parody/farce/comedy. The voices of the cartoon characters were like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Oh it’s the animation that’s the issue. That’s another story.

When Maude died.

Show went from being funny to mean.

Agreed. Fox has to wake up and realize McFarlan’s 15 minutes are up...

Cleveland Show, never funny.
American Dad, never funny.

Family Guy - was once funny

I truly cannot believe American Dad or Cleveland got renewed, and if last nights premier is any indication, Family Guy needs to be put in the trash bin as well.
