Living faces for a change on US stamps: Postal Service wants to know who you want to see

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Who would you put on a stamp? Charlie Sheen? Lady Gaga? Yourself?

Hoping to boost sagging revenue, the U.S. Postal Service on Monday abandoned its longstanding rule that stamps cannot feature people who are still alive and is asking the public for suggestions.

It's a first that means living sports stars, writers, artists and other prominent -- or not-so-prominent -- people could take their places in postal history next to the likes of George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., and Marilyn Monroe.

"This change will enable us to pay tribute to individuals for their achievements while they are still alive to enjoy the honor," said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

But it seems to be at least as much about money as admiration.

How long will it be before we see Obama on a stamp?

Gee, I was recently sent an email joke about an Obama stamp. People were returning it as defective but it turns out they were just spitting on the wrong side.

Typical government thinking.

A private company would have immediately realized the monetary potential of auctioning off stamp rights...

How much do you think Google CEO Eric Schmidt (or the two founders) would pay to have their faces on millions of pieces of mail every year? The USPS could erase their debt that way. But no...

Living people on US stamps: Who would you choose?

I've got something better: Stamps with the flavor of whatever is pictured. Of course, I think they're all self-sticking now.

Or scratch and sniff stamps. The one of Barry could feature the stink of desperation.

Do we have to kill them first? That might make a difference in my list of candidates.

Hillary Clinton Commemorative Stamp

The US Postal Service has issued a recall of a stamp they created with a picture of Hillary Clinton to honor her achievements while serving as the First Lady of our nation.

The problem was discovered when claims had been made that the stamp was not sticking to envelopes, and that mail which had been sent using the "Hillary" postage was not being delivered. Senator Clinton demanded a full investigation into the allegations.

A special Postal Service Investigation team was formed and after several months and many dollars spent, made the following findings:

*The stamp was manufactured properly.
*There was nothing wrong with the adhesive.
*People were just spitting on the wrong side.

There is a reason that we have traditionally shunned honoring living people with ship names, stamps, etc.

All that has been changing over the last 20 years, and I don’t think that is a coincidence.

It is hard to have a cult of personality with such prohibitions.

I wish we would go back to symbols and symbolic images on coins and stamps again.

The shield emblem on the back of the penny last year was the best design work on a U.S. coin in decades.

Go back to Lady Liberty, or the Shield of Truth, or Minerva, or any of our early images.
