Word For The Day, Wednesday, September 28, 2011 - moiety
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 9/28/2011 | The Slacker

Posted on 09/28/2011 5:14:02 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

moiety \MOY-uh-tee\ - noun

1a. one of two equal parts; half
2b. one of two approximately equal parts
2. one of the portions into which something is divided; component, part
3: one of two basic complementary tribal subdivisions

Example sentence:

"According to the FDA, a new molecular entity or new chemical entity is a drug that contains no active moiety that has been approved by the FDA for any other application submitted under section 505(b) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act." -- From Ibis Sanchez-Serrano's 2011 book The World's Health Care Crisis: From the Laboratory Bench to the Patient's Bedside

Extra Example sentence:

"She was asked to describe the tribe's two moieties. She said the Winter and Summer People provided the basic religious and social structure…." -- From Joanne Barker's 2011 book Native Acts: Law, Recognition, and Cultural Authenticity

Did you know?
"Moiety" is one of thousands of words that English speakers borrowed from French. The Anglo-French "moitè" (meaning "a half" or "part of something") comes from Late Latin "medietat-," meaning "half." Around the same time that "moiety" was borrowed from Anglo-French, "medietat-" was also borrowed directly from Latin as "mediety," a word which can also mean "a half." "Medietat-" comes from Latin "medius" (meaning "middle"), which has contributed to such English words as "medium," "meridian," and "milieu."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD:

The non-taxpaying moiety of Americans is always cheered when some rich liberal idiot promotes higher taxes on the rest of us.

Cautionary tale of Google guy who wants Obama tax hike [$300K Dem Donor]

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

Only days left until BO's replacement is sworn in.

IT'S ABOUT DANG TIME!!!

Get to class you slackers! I've opened a new classroom, but Dave forgot to get the gradebook from xsmommy. So if you're looking for a grade you'll have to ping her. Secret Garden and Tioga are usually pretty generous with the plusses if you compliment their shapely legs, so you might try submitting your homework to them instead. My secret for getting extra plusses on my A+ from xs will remain a secret between me and her, so you're on your own if you want her to review your work.

Moiety...

very similar to the word the waiter uses when your drink is running low -

Motesa?

(Moh-tea-suh?)

So, this Aussie was talking about moiety:
“Now yer Sheila — she’s all about poiety.
That’s good fer the mate
But to balance yer plate,
My forte’s the lack of sobroiety...”

In Bob Lonsberry's essay, "Why not Herman Cain" he seems determined to ignore the female moiety of this nation who could contribute to the leadership of this country from 2012 on.

I'm looking for a grade here

Moiety..Equal parts of something.

O.K., sounds about right. Woke up this morning at the crack o’ nine and there’s about half rain, half mist coming down making everthing moiety and soggiety.

Now for you little snuff dippers that were fed too many whiskey sips as youngin’s, don’t confuse this with some French fried word like “moi” which is just bad English.

About those tribal divisions, I dunno about that. Maybe “Moe” and “Eddy”, Moiety, but that sounds more like them boys what wears their undies backards if you know what I mean.

Moiety? How can that be a real English word if I can’t pronounce it?

MOre than a moiety of insanity on the part of those attempting to read the Palin tealeaves! I saw Tammy Bruce [a rabid palinbot] tweeting last night about how ridic people were for trying to talk Christie into running. OMG, she does precisely on behalf of Palin what she was deriding others for doing with Christie. It's just nuttiness all around.

I’m watching TV last night, and UPMC (the dominant medical provider in the region) runs an ad talking about their supplier diversity program. An African-American woman talks about how she started with one mop and a sweeper and how her business has grown as a supplier to UPMC. Video of various other African American employees cleaning medical offices is interspersed.

I turn to the wife and say “Is UPMC really bragging about how noble they are in hiring black people to clean up?”

They don’t have any minority accountants or couriers or printer repairmen?

The Democrat party is composed of two moieties, an undereducated underclass and a ruling class east coast elite who exploit them for votes.
