Price of new Amazon tablet could be big attraction

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is expected to launch its long-awaited tablet computer on Wednesday, sporting a low-enough price to give Apple Inc's iPad some serious competition for the first time.

At a news conference Wednesday morning in New York, Amazon will likely unveil a seven-inch tablet that will let users read e-books, download digital music and video games and stream movies and TV shows.

Analysts expect the tablet to be priced around $250, roughly half the price of Apple's dominant iPad, which starts at $499.

"If Amazon prices the Kindle Fire at $250, it has the potential to become the most successful competitor to the iPad," Gene Munster, an analyst at PiperJaffray, said on Tuesday.

Having its own tablet is important for Amazon because the company has amassed a mountain of digital goods and services that could be sold through such a device. As the world's largest Internet retailer, a tablet might also encourage Amazon customers to shop online for physical products more often.

Munster surveyed 410 consumers last week, asking whether they would buy a 10-inch iPad for $599 or a seven-inch Amazon tablet at $249.

Just over 60 percent of those surveyed said they would purchase the Amazon device, while 21 percent said they would likely buy the iPad, Munster reported. The analyst used a $599 price because he said that is the average price of the iPad.

Kindle rocks... I use mine everyday.

But I am surprised that they went in that direction. Not so long ago, Amazon’s CEO was saying that they did not intend to go in that market. Also, he was saying the touch screen wasn’t the best for reading books (you lose definition).

I as trying to figure out if the display on the Fire was the display used by the Notion Adam Ink....combines color and eReader which works so well in direct sunlight....

I Don't believe it is...

Watch for people getting surprised when they assume the Fire will deliver readable content in bright sunlight!

The only real question I have is the “and free always-connected 3G wireless”.

I know it sounds too good to be true, but it is true. My daughter has one and it is online all the time. She can go anywhere on the net.

That’s just for the e-ink devices. You don’t burn up much bandwidth downloading 400kb e-books. The tablet with the slick browser is wi-fi only....

I'll pass. I'm doing just fine with my Asus netbook with massive storage and it will do all the Kindle Fire does plus I can read ANY format of ANY ebook ever made. Not just proprietary Amazon content.

The one upgrade I may consider when I get the dough is to the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. A friend has one and it is sweeeet.

3M makes Mary Lou Jepsen's dreams come true, showers Pixel Qi with cash

Chances are you've heard plenty about Pixel Qi's super-efficient, transreflective displays. The odds are equally as high that you've never touched one before, either. Well, 3M aims to change all of that and make good on founder Mary Lou Jepsen's continued promises to get those screens out into the consumer wild. Infusing the LCD company with an undisclosed amount of cash, 3M's New Ventures investment arm is betting the combo of its Optical Systems Division's LCD film technology expertise and funding will not only ramp up production of the sunlight-readable color screens, but also innovate uses for it across "...consumer markets as well as digital signage and touch applications." It's a nice shot of confidence for the display maker's much-touted, albeit scarce tech, and could be the financial boost necessary to take Jepsen from underdog to industry heavyweight. 3M Invests in Pixel Qi Corp.

ST. PAUL, Minn. & SAN BRUNO, Calif. & TAIPEI, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--3M, through its 3M New Ventures organization, has invested in Pixel Qi Corp., a developer of next generation LCD panels with operations in Taiwan and California. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded by LCD pioneer, Dr. Mary Lou Jepsen in 2008, Pixel Qi designs unique, innovative LCD screens that solve problems not addressed by conventional screens. Its first products are sunlight-readable, low-power LCD panels aimed for mobile device applications.

iPad has Kindle. My books on iPad look the same as on my mother’s Kindle. Some functionality is missing, but I don’t need it for the kind of reading I do on Kindle. I have other apps that allow me to annotate the PDFs that I use for teaching.

It took me awhile to get some real use from my iPad and now I love it. I would buy my grad school son the Amazon product for Christmas though; price is price as long as it does most of what we want.

I was asking not because of the apps, but because of the ability to ease eye strain by using the e-ink. It’s really like reading a paper book when you read a kindle.
