What's up with all the fighting? (here on FR)
djf

Posted on 10/06/2011 8:45:42 PM PDT by djf

OK, as usual today I read through a dozen (actually probably more) threads about various subjects.

I am interested is seeing the news. I am interested in reading other peoples opinions about what is happening.

Just about every thread I visited had such a huge amount of rancor and spite and outright viciousness it was practically unbearable.

So what is up with all the fighting? Why does every thread turn into a room full of drunk badgers, wolverines with an estrogen overload, and cross dressing hyenas?

Don't we have the ability to be even just a little bit civil with people we disagree with? Are we not adults here? Or at least trying to be?

I finally realized why I've been getting the urge alot lately to pop "Lord of The Flies" in my DVD players!

I understand that people have strong opinions about politics, but it's getting to the point I'd be scared to go to a FReeper party because I KNOW it would turn into a flash mob brawl!!

Calm down folks! Switch to decaff or something!

I put up a thread called "More Than 100 Days Ago" intending to generate an interesting discussion about Palin.

You should see the juvenile remarks and taunts and insults that now pass for "discussion" here on FR.

Large parts of the facade of the American Century are collapsing in front of people and there has been very little preparation for the transition. Reagan wasn’t a saint. Bush wasn’t a saint. Bush II wasn’t a saint. Palin isn’t a saint.

FR has a large contingent connected to the military, mention to them the need for the DoD to cut their budget by 45% just to stop the increase in debt, and they go ballistic.

FR has a large contingent connected to Law Enforcement, mention to them the need for Law Enforcement to cut their budget back to levels before 9/11 just to stop the increase in debt, and they go ballistic.

FR has a large contigent connected to government social safety net redistribution, tell them that SS, Medicare, Tricare, Medicaid, VA Benefits, etc will have to be cut back to halt a total collapse, and they get mighty upset.

The vast majority of Republican politicians in the last six decades failed the American Republic. Many on FR worked hard to get those men and women into positions of power, and to tell them that these pols have abused their powers to the point that Western Civilization will need civil unrest and a debt jubilee to reset the debts, makes those Freepers mighty upset.

And on and on.

All of these facades will crumble before the reality of the new American landscape as the pie shrinks and the survivors fight for scraps, and the election of 2012 will be a big big deal, a turning point mentioned in history books in the coming centuries.

Everyone, from FR and every other online forum, and every person on the street, will get nasty as we approach a generally recognized consensus that our collective goose is cooked and there is no escape.

It isn’t complicated. With 3 yrs of zero and his corrupt administration, and despite the 2010 elections, we feel like we’ve stood still, if not lost ground. zero is at a negative and we can’t knock him out. The right is leaderless, rudderless.

I agree.

JimRob’s rule on no name-calling goes a long way toward civility for just a little effort.

The more it is ignored, the more it is ignored.

Pretty soon it sounds like “them” around here.

Plus, the value of FR is, at bottom, when it is used as a place for people to have substantive, intelligent discusions and analysis. If every thread is nothing but “you stupid,” “no, you stupid,” FR stops providing value.

I move that these species be used to replace those idiotic viking cats and moose. And maybe even the Manatees, although they tend to be peace-keepers.

Manatees taste pretty good if you grill 'em medium rare after marinating them in a nice snail-darter sauce.

And the problem is....?

Free speech at its' finest. The best ideas are the ones that are put through the crucible of open debate, taking as much heat as possible.

Passions are high, because so much is at stake. Better that rhetoric and debate help to blow off some of that steam, rather than powder and bullets.

I think it is a sign of the times during a primary fight.

I belonged (past tense) to a Tea Party group here in Tiny Town that was blown to smithereens by groups of rabid supporters of various candidates. Fortunately, there is still a large TP group nearby that is a little more sane.

I love FR...wouldn’t change it for the world. I love the opinions.

I just don’t post to threads that might cause the world to fall on my head.

That being said, sometimes I don’t know that the world may fall on my head for what I consider to be an opinion. ;)

I think there will be 37 different sides and a whole lot of blood

My protest movement will be focused on ponies. Every American should get one free pony of their choosing from the government. I plan to round up thousands of bronies and assorted fans of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic show. I think I can turn out quite a crowd for occupation and seizure of various playgrounds around the nation beginning very soon. We will carry really cute signs of AppleJack and Fluttershy which will make those mean tax payers agree to our demands. Our protests will be bloodless for now.... But once it becomes clear we have no way to feed or take care of our ponies, we'll be back for more of your tax money and darn it, things could conceivable get bloody if we had any weapons or knew how to use them. If you do, please don't hurt us, we only want ponies....

You can thank dimwit trolls for a lot of the infighting. They live to stir discontent on FR. I would say most of the people bitching and moaning are DU(or other dimwit org)trolls.

...yer a dirty rotten stinky pinko commie!

I have even noticed long-time, solidly conservative, patriotic Freepers with a staunchly conservative posting history are being labeled thusly.

Careful!!

Some people are highly allergic to snail-darter in any form!

Might I suggest the “Creme d’owl Spottee” instead?

There's a great deal of anxiety about the state of the nation, about the economic morass, about the quality of candidates willing to run against Obama. The polarization of the American people has strengthened under this regime.

Some of the aggravation is bleeding into the usual candidate vetting. Too much if you ask me. I'm concerned for the volatility between the both sides and among those who disagree with the Obama policies.

We saw it with the debt ceiling battle. We're seeing it with the candidates.

There's no one running who is able to unite and inspire our side. Cooler heads must prevail going into 2012 or the opposition to Obama will tear itself apart.

At this point, I expect Obama will win reelection.

I’ve been noticing for most of the year now.

Some posters just like to cause havoc, and the Mods let them. They even let them come back after being banned.

There seems to be some uncivility allowed by certain Freepers, and this is growing into what you see today.

SOME can be allowed to break all the rules, and other Freepers notice. If only some are allowed and others notice, it is not surprising that it has come to all feeling like they can behave like they have the mods backing.

I have seen this for more than a year now.

I hardly come here anymore because of it.
