Barry Sanders to Perform Monday Night Football in Place of Hank Williams Jr
NESN ^ | 10/7/2011 | Erik Frenz

Whether it was the decision of ESPN or Hank Williams Jr., the song that has been the staple of ESPN's Monday Night Football intro for 20 years is no more. With that, NFL fans across the country immediately began to speculate as to what would be the next song to lead into everyone's favorite Monday night programming.

It turns out there may not be a song at all, at least for the time being.

Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders announced via Twitter that he will do the intro for this week's matchup between the Lions and the Bears.

"Ok, I admit it," Sanders said. "I will be at MNF this week and doing the intro."

It's fitting that the network was able to get Sanders to do it, as this will be the first time that the Lions are playing a prime-time game since 2005, and the first time they appear on MNF since 2001.

From the sound of it, the spoken word will be the intro of choice for now.

According to the Detroit Free Press, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said, "This is the format we'll likely use the remainder of the season. We haven't made any decisions beyond that."

I go along with the performer on this one. The network is way out of line. PC run amok!

Me too. Hope their ratings tank. Good grief, it’s not 2008 anymore. They can stop with the obama worship. People don’t like him any more.

I agree with Hank his 1st A rights were violated.

If Hank really said that then he's a dope who should not run for Senator (as I've read he's thinking about). Your employer is allowed to fire you according to what he thinks is good for his business -- no matter how dumb you may find that. This isn't a 1st Amendment case at all.

That said, I agree with your decision. ESPN is run by a politically correct bunch of jerks. I won't watch it either. Not because of any constitutional issues, but because it's so stupid.

By the way, my brother works at NASCAR headquarters. You should hear what's going on there as the management ranks are gradually being filled with East Coast MBA's who don't even like auto racing.

I don’t see what the problem was with what Hank said.

I have a better idea, why not just go back to the classic MNF theme.

This one is a classic, from when I was a kid.

This one is also perfect (though this YouTube recording is messed up). That's my beloved 49ers routing the Dolphins in the '85 SB at the end there.

I really couldn't care less about Hank Williams Jr. He has a right to say whatever he wants, and ESPN has a right to get rid of him if they want. And the old themes with no one singing were a hundred times better.

Always liked Barry. Class act on the field and fun to watch.

I’d rather see Colonel Sanders for this one.

Umm, sure you do. If you own your own business, you can say whatever the hell you want. Doesn’t Rush do it all the time? Although if you are working for someone else then obviously you can get canned.

I agree.

An employer should have the last say, especially if the employee is a highly paid visible one that people associate with the organization.

That said, this whole thing is a stupid liberal hyperventilation. I heard what he said, and he didn’t compare Hitler to Obama. He said Obama playing golf with Boehner is like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu.

The whole thing is a witch-hunt and there are a lot of liberals who want his scalp. But...working for an employer like that requires you to engage your brain when speaking publicly.

Only if Phil Fulmer is back coaching again.

I will NOT be watching Monday Night Football For what these Bozo’s did. I watched the video posted on the Blaze The attorney up first, and Mr. Finebaum sounded most Conservative.
But I notice the yap with the soapbox was that Bigot Zirin, of the Nation And he should never speak about Country Music—nor the South -cause he clearly understands neither. The Jones
had to get in his Jesse HiJackson Or Rev. Twana Brawley reflection. And the skirt said very little. All things heard
on the Blaze I will not patronize ESPN Nor watch Monday Night Fooseball.

The Hitler comparison was ill advised, but the response to it was very Hitleresque.

I have a better idea, why not just go back to the classic MNF theme.

Are referring to the song Hank Williams Jr. always sang?

That theme song was written by Hank and I'm sure he owns the rights to it. It's actually a song he reworked from his country music hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight".

He probably isn't in the frame of mind to let MNF use his song.
