Story of the Week WHO'S AFRAID OF THE BIG, BAD WOLF? MamamaMEEE!!

This wolf was shot recently in Drayton Valley , Alberta.which is near Edmonton about 3 hours North of Calgary. The wolf weighed over 230 lbs smashing the previous record of 175 lbs. Wouldn't want to run into this puppy in the woods. Apparently a bear hunter witnessed this wolf chase off a big black bear at his baiting station..

Checked the archive and couldn't find this.

Boy, I love wolves and would never shoot one. But I'd love this one a lot more with my trusty .308 at my side, especially if his pack were made up of other outsized specimens!

My dad use to say one wolf won’t kill you but a pack sure would...with the size of that wolf, he’s a pack all by himself....

Unless, that's Bill Kazmaier holding up that Wolf, I doubt it's 230lbs.

I could believe every bit of 230 lbs. If the holder is 6 feet tall, that wolf is at least 7 feet long, and mostly bulky body. Never have I seen one like that. Find yourself in the woods with a six shooter, and the pack is 10 you are going to hope for no scent and being very quiet in a tall tree. That is one reason, wolves should NOT be reintroduced into areas my forefathers cleared them out of.

A 230lb wolf defeats the point of a wolf. The weight is too big to serve a purpose of a efficient, mobile carnivore. He's a large wolf, but not 230lbs.

I have seen many dogs that weigh 100+ pounds and I am sure you have, too. In comparison that wolf is easily 230 lbs.

“I have seen dogs that weigh 100 pounds...”

My GSD weighs 105 and is big boned to boot. (meaning he is not fat at all). This wolf’s weight at 230 wouldn’t surprise me...

If I have to choose... I’d pick the wolf to go up against. Mountain Lions scare the dickens out of me...

What was the point in killing this wolf? IMO, the wolf in that picture was beautiful. A wolf os such size is rare. I understand killing animals for food or protection (the article doesn’t seem to indicate his life was in danger), but killing for “fun”, I fail to comprehend.

Talk to the folks in AK. I have had folks tell me in some areas the moose calf survivability rate is less than 10% thanks to wolves and bear. There is just too many of them.

I hope they killed that lion because it was a human killer, lions are known to continue targeting humans if they get taste of it. Otherwise it's a pity, such beautiful creature.

I own a mastiff that weighs 225 lbs, and I think the wolf in that photo weighs 230 lbs easily. Big chest, long heavy body, huge head, meaty shoulders and hips.
