When sexual harassment complaints against Herman Cain unfolded at the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990s, the issue was all too familiarfor the trade association.
In the wake of the televised 1991 Clarence Thomas Supreme Court confirmation hearings and the widely publicized sexual harassment charges leveled against him by Anita Hill American businesses had been hit by a wave of sexual harassment cases. And the restaurant industry, in particular, was hit especially hard.
Industry officials saw it coming none other than Cain himself warned as long ago as 1991 that changes in federal law resulting from the hearings could cause problems for employers.
This bill opens the door for opportunists who will use the legislation to make some money, Cain, then CEO of Godfathers Pizza, told Nations Restaurant News. Im certainly for civil rights, but I dont know if this bill is fair because of what well have to spend to defend ourselves in unwarranted cases.
In Cains own situation, sexual harassment allegations during his late 1990s tenure as NRA CEO led to at least two settlements with employees: one for approximately $45,000 and another in the mid-$30,000s.

I’m no longer interested in anything Politico has to say on this or any other subject at all, in any way, shape, or form.
Hey Politico, “under Obama” America started it’s rapid decline into the abyss. Too bad you’ve chosen to cheer it on.
Nice try but you shot yourselves in the head Politico. You exposed yourself as shameless scum and Conservatives will not forget
They are the laughing stock. Those idiots thought they had a blue dress . Like their friends at occupy land , they are living in the past. Therefore totally irrelevant.
Politico can kiss my arse. I will never believe anything they post, their reputation is soiled forever.
Why even bother going to the site anymore.
Industry officials saw it coming -- none other than Cain himself warned as long ago as 1991 that changes in federal law resulting from the hearings could cause problems for employers. "This bill opens the door for opportunists who will use the legislation to make some money," Cain, then CEO of Godfather's Pizza, told Nation's Restaurant News. "I'm certainly for civil rights, but I don't know if this bill is fair because of what we'll have to spend to defend ourselves in unwarranted cases."For lurking and trolling Demwits, this is an example of "blowback".
LOL, um yeah, your goose is really cooked this time Politico.
The mental disorder, known as liberalism, is on full display at Politico as they desperately fling anything and everything in their attempt to destroy Cain.
1994: One of our female employees 30 feet away from a manager’s office was listening in on a conversation with his WIFE when they were discussing getting away from the kids for a weekend and what kind of nightgown she should buy.
Next thing I know she is claiming harassment by the poor guy because she was “offended” with overhearing the conversation.
How do I know what they were talking about? His wife came to his defense and even sat in on the attorneys meeting about how to make her complaint “go away” - money.
Now that might be entertaining ~ in a marginal sort of way.
They had this loaded in the computer ready to print. Cain was going to fold then they were going to show, no prove, what a hypocrite he is.
I agree.. I will not visit the Politico website.
I used to go to Politico a lot, but not any more.
Politico has run 90 stories in this vein in the last week.
Wonder if there was an uptick in “unexplained murder of naked femake found in river” situations in that era?
Made me wonder if the complaints against him (whatever they were and whomever they are made by) might have been retribution (by whom I cannot guess...maybe ambulance chasing lawyers) for his proactive efforts in the NRA to prevent frivolous claims.
I wish I could remember what I was watching last night (something I have never seen before, maybe “RT news??”). The anchor reporter had two guests on the show. One of them said Politico is the equivalent in Washington of the National Enquirer. His facial and body expressions, mannerisms, and vocal tone were totally dismissive of ANYTHING Politico had to say. The other guy was a Journalism Professor, and he stated (in so many words) that it’s all about ratings, staying in the limelight for the newspaper or TV show, and that it’s a business, and the business isn’t about journalism, but about driving viewers to their sponsors. He said it was about catering to specific demographics in an effort to make sponsors (advertisers) happy, to generate more ad revenue, etc.
With Cain at the helm as CEO in 1998, the association created a video to explain sexual harassment laws to its members and created a sample sexual harassment policy for individual restaurants to use, according to a Chicago Tribune story at the time.
LMFAO!!! Now they're suggesting Cain was out front with sexual harassment policy implementation and training. Something has Politico *REALLY* spooked, and it ain't Holloween!
Maybe Bennett showed them the copy of that severance agreement he finally got hold of, and realized that "you're the same height as my wife" just doesn't rise to the salaciousness of "Kiss it, baby"!
