I was coming home from last Monday around midnight and an owl swooped down in front of me and flew down the road just ahead of my truck for about one-quarter mile before turning and heading across a field.
Bad, Hedwig! Bad, bad, bad, Hedwig!
We have redtailed hawks living downtown here in Columbia SC. After eons of shunning human habitations the raptor species finally discovered that cities contain a concentrated inexhaustible food supply: pigeons and squirrels.
And size doesn’t dissuade them. I was walking through a park when I realized I was being watched; I looked up at an oak branch maybe twenty feet away and there was a hawk. His yellow eyes were fixed on me like I was his next breakfast!
Regularly, a hawk will drop down on my lovely, sweet mourning doves, content at my feeders....it’s an amzing sight to watch them drop down silently. The poor doves don’t know what hit them ;(
Here in TN my two dogs, on an 85 lb. pitador and the other a 9 mo. old Greatr Dane (about 90 lb.) also have no problem with this. It’s also nice to have shall issue CCW. When’s IL going to get with the program?

While stopped for gas on the Alcan Hwy. in ‘71, we saw some kind of bird — hawk? eagle? something else? — carry off an annoying yippy dog. Creepy.
Owls have taken our cats at night;by the time one awakens and goes outside the owl is flying away with the poor cat likely already dead from a beak strike to the brain.
Interestingly, these attacks only happened after the overhead electric wires were removed;I wonder if owls and hawks are more prevalent in places with underground utilities?
Yep—these little dogs can be snacks. City slickers—lol
